Looking for any suggestions on increasing lung capacity. I know there are some products on the market with resistance valves-- do they work?

thanks

High altitude mountaineers who ascend/descend alpine style believe in the benefits of those training devices.

Alpine style refers to mountaineering in a self-sufficient manner, thereby carrying all of one's food, shelter, equipment etc. as one climbs, as opposed to expedition style (or siege style) mountaineering which involves setting up a fixed line of stocked camps on the mountain which can be accessed at one's leisure. Additionally, alpine style means the refusal of fixed ropes, high altitude porters and the use of supplemental oxygen.

Unless you have a medical condition (in which case you should talk to your doctor), just get on your bike and ride. Uphill preferrably. And hurt yourself a bit. Works wonders.

I don't know your gender, but all the books tell me my pregnant wife's lungs are processing oxygen more efficiently...

Kind of an extreme solution, though.

Can you just increase lung capacity and not worry about oxygen uptake into the blood stream? What about lactic threshold? What about V02 Max? I don't know about you but my friends are impressed with cycling speed and endurance and not how much air lungs hold.

Dope....then just say you have larger lungs. It worked for Lance. By the way, Danielle is going to hear about this.

You can't increase your lung capacity-it's set by your anatomy-unlike other parts of anatomy that can be enhanced your lungs are only so big. Now if you have asthma you can use medications so your lungs will have a bigger effective capacity since you open up airways that are "closed". There are a number of elite athletes that develop bronchoconstriction when they are working at greater than 90% VO2 max and they benefit from using an inhaler. The pro peleton used to have a lot of asthmatics but not so much now that you need an actual diagnosis to be on these drugs.
go out and ride hard, uphill. That will do it.

Those products work to separate you from your money. If you have excess money--get one!

The other two splendid options (one involves money too): move to Leadville (or any such elevation) and/or ride harder.
