Don't know if this is happening where you are, but single-speed (not necessarily fixed-wheel) seems to be taking over. I'm very tempted. What's the general consensus out there?

Amazingly, it's spreading everywhere, even out here into the suburbs. I'm seeing hipsters on fixies and single speeds all the time now.

They are fantastic bicycles for JRA and when one doesn't wish to get all lycra'd-up to pedal someplace.
good reason to have more than one bike. Why ride your 11 spd record carbon flyweight to go to the corner store? I commute on my fixy, ride distance on weekends on my steely, and ride trails on my mtn. bike when it suits me.

I was in Portland Oregon recently and it was like the set of Juno.
Plenty of old 10 speeds rockin' the hood.

The CTC grognards were single speeders, the English believed that
crooked chainlines and derailer pulleys were big power robbers.
