Front teeth Difference on RD question

I am looking at buying a RD on probike kit and was hoping someone could give me an explanation on what the "Max front teeth difference is". I am new to the sport and am upgrading to an ultegra group this winter and want to make sure I am getting the right parts. Please help....Thanks

big chain ring minus little chainring:
53-39= 14 is the teeth difference
if you are going for a triple, ignore the middle ring.
