I bought this Kvale frame/fork today from a fellow forum member fully intending to build it up as a fixed gear commuter. But now that I see the details...

Especially the brazed on hanger...

And the integrated cable routing...

I am thinking that I can't use this work of art as a fixed gear, can I?
CAN I???

I see a really nice frame with long horizontal dropouts.
Long horizontal dropouts are perfect for a fixie. It is like the frame is taunting you. Challenging you to free it from the encumbrance of gears and clicky bits.

Whatever you decide to do, be sure and chase those bb threads and apply some frame saver before you build it back up! Its a gorgeous frameset. It deserves to be ridden hard and put away wet.

Nice frame, build it however you'll get the most use out of it.

A nice fixie shouldn't be a conversion, IMHO, and a sweet frameset like that one shouldn't be a fixie conversion.

Good point. Considering I already have a Pegoretti Duende for long distance comfort and a Peg Great Googoolee Moogoolee for speed, the "most use" would be as a fixed gear commuter/trainer.

Nice bike. Gotta Kirk color vibe. With other bikes like youve got, fixie it up, just keep it nicer than the average fixie...

Place Campy Record on it and ride it like you stole it! That is way to nice for a beater.

You can always put gears on it later.

It's unfair to the bike to build it as a fixed-gear. It will never again experience the thrill of a 50mph descent. It wil never again lean as far into a turn. There are roads it will no longer travel; mountains it will no longer climb.
Won't someone please think of the bikes?

I'm kinda in a similar position. I have Luigino that I'm slowly collecting parts for. And as I wait for the parts/deals to come up I'm thinking whether it would be wrong to set it up as a single speed.
I say do it - just don't grind off the rear derailleur tab or other braze-ons.

Too late...
Seriously, I think this frame would make for a stunning fixed gear (NOT a beater) that I would ride several times a week instead of going into rotation with my Duende and GGM.

i have an old merckx criterium frame. i bought it a long time ago when i was a bike mssngr in boston. and i set it up ss w/a big gear and 2 brakes. it was awesome. a few years later, i built it up w/full group and raced it. i have a few bikes now, including a track bike and a cple road bikes, and the merckx crit bike is back to its mssngr glory days. i ride it a lot. so i say, hell yeah make it a fixed gear and enjoy it!
