We've debated base miles alot here, but it still deserves a read. I believe Doofus posted something a while back along those lines...?

As a triathlete, this is pretty much what I have done the last two years, and will do again this year. During the winter, I focus on increasing the power I can maintain for an hour, by doing 15-20 minute intervals near that power level. I don't ride for more than an hour at a time (on the trainer). Since I'm also swimming and running, I don't worry about my endurance. I have recently read that a good way to train for a distance event (my 'A' race this year is a half Ironman in June) is to build the power first, then work on the endurance starting about 12 weeks out.
