I got into road biking at the start of the summer and made an impulse buy. I have a set of Shimano Ultegra ST-6603 Triple STI levers in box (with all cables, directions, and parts as was shipped) that I am trying to get my money back so that I can purchase a Double. This set is brand new, in box, never mounted.

asking $150....shipping from NY

PM with any questions/inquiries

First, it is often better to not use the classifieds for your first post.

Second, you can use triple STi Levers on a double without any issues.

Yeah I knew I was going to get some grief for this being my first post.

I went in to my LBS and asked them about using a 6603 as a double instead of the triple and the mechanic told me it wouldn't work correctly and would be extremely finicky......Was I mislead? As I said i just got into the sport and I have outgrown my stock tiagra/sora group I have now, so any help you can give me I greatly appreciate.....

I'm still learning

It's a little harder to get a silent cross-chaining action with the triple lever on a double but, for all intents and purposes, they're functionally identical. Triple lever will have a shorter throw when set up double, but that's not a bad thing.

BK,

Wow, where did you get those for just $150? That's a steal.

I got those from nashbar a couple months back. they were on sale because i think the 2009 line was rolling in and they needed to make room. Also, they had a special that if you spend over $250 then they give x% (i can't remember the exact amount) off your total purchase. So my dad and I decided to each get a pair, putting us over that $250 mark. it ended up being $150 including the shipping so I really couldn't pass it up. I am much happier now that I know i can use a double with this set......Now i just need to find some more good buys......Anyone ever order from Ribble before?

"Acotts" and "DannyG1" are right. You can use the triple brifters without much issue with a double setup. I did the exact thing. Had my work done at Sid's in NYC (West side location). Worked like a charm.

Good luck!

Perhaps, Shimano differs, FC-6603 for Triple only, FC-6600 for Double only.
The 9 Speed 6500 and 7700 series were usable for Double or Triple. This changed with the 10 speed series as they used to be with the 7-8 speeds.

Then again if you say it works, what do I know.

PS, Nashbar had a sale on the 6603 that just ended.

I think that 9 speed Ultegra was good with triple or double but the DA brifters were one or the other.

Alright so since this is all new to me.....

this is a yes or no that my 6603 brifters will work with a double crank? I really am looking forward to upgrading my drive train this winter and obviously this is what I will have to go around when i start looking at FD,RD, Crank, Cassette, etc......I appreciate the help!

Check with your local shop, but perhaps
calling Shimano 1-949-951-5003 first.
