View Full Version : Do I splurge on Record

I feel for the american dealers, as the dollar surges against the euro, the european prices on Campy have plummeted. There is an outfit in Italy which is having a sale on 2009 Record and Chorus. I know it is new, why a sale?

I am planning on purchasing Shifters, Record Chain, Chorus Cassette, Front and Rear Derailleurs. My choice is do I splurge for Record or remain with Chorus.

5 piece record gruppo $770.45

5 piece chorus gruppo $709.31

As a compact user, I will appreciate having the 25, 18 and 12 tooth cogs in one cassette.

I opened the post and clicked Chorus, however after seeing the $60 price difference I changed to record.

I didn't vote. I think it best to get both and compare when the boxes arrive. Sell the loser to a lucky forum member!

If your are asking then it doesn't matter:)
You will love either of them.
Save the $ and buy a nice bottle of wine.
or
Spend the $ and skip on a few bottles of wine.

Great options and a no loose situation.

$60 difference? Hello. Record.

What outfit in Italy? The only one I've tried is www.comobike.com. Good prices, but no stock yet. I preordered two Campy Record groups in late August, but no availabilty yet. The price just keeps getting lower.

The price difference on those 5-piece groups is a no-brainer. Record it is.

I'm interested to see how well the 11 speed chain works with 10 speed cranks and FD. Don't forget that you NEED the 11 speed chain tool. If you don't peen the right end of the joining pin, you may be the first to suffer a chain failure and related crash. Worst case, you need a properly fitting 5.9mm connecting link.

I decided to place an order at www.bike24.com in Germany and now have two Record groups on the way, but the shipping was outrageous and apparently slow. The website says 30 Euro, but I get an e-mail that says I can opt for 3 packages at 100 Euro or one at 165 Euro. I opted for the cheaper method, but may regret that, if it takes 3 weeks to arrive.

Also tried an order at www.totalcycling.com. They were out of the 11-25 cassette I wanted, but charged my credit card for a 5-piece group anyway, while I sat for 2 weeks wondering where my parts were. That order got canceled today. They claimed to have sent me an e-mail advising me of the problem, but I never got it and it took three days of sending e-mails to finally get a response.

My daddy asked me to look at this thread as he thought there must have been a misprint. I think you have two choices:

1. Do the only sensible rational thing and purchase Record. The difference is only $61.14.

2. Be irrational, emotional, sensitive, and loving, and purchase Chorus. Take the $61.14 you save and puchase a few chew toys and a big box of dog biscuits for me. You would never be able to tell the difference between Chorus and Record anyway, and you would make a dog very happy!

Go for number two. It makes the most sense, human and dog.

PS- My daddy voted for Record.

They're both equally great. That price difference is the lowest I've seen.

The only real difference is the decal and some ti bits.
Go to the Campa site and do the side-by-side comparison.

I have bought Record piece by piece on eBay or here, at good prices, but if I were to do it again I'd just forget the hassle and get Chorus: less blingy, not quite as "aloof", more pragmatic. Heck, current Centaur is as good or better than Record of a few years ago. The Campa "trickle-down" effect gets faster and faster every year and continually puts the top 3 gruppos closer together.

It all comes down to what you want to with the $60.
Like put it it towards another component, tires, maintenance (lubes, etc.), tires, whatever.

Or a nice dinner for 2, a couple of boxed CD sets of your favorite bands, gas, a gift for a loved one, your very own personal "stimulus check", a rebate to all those who have voted so far, a homeless person, a legit social assistance program, some good books....

Chorus.
My $61.14 opinion.

One more for Record. Further, if you ever decide to sell your parts, you'll get a higher resale value (if that's a consideration).

For example, I sold my C-Record seatpost for $84 or $30 more than what I paid for it, and that's after using it for over 12 years!

We're talking 11 speed here right?
Go super record or chorus.

The brakes and cranks are where the most weight diff is but for 61 bucks? Do it- you deserve it with the miles and commitment you have.

What's this so-called Chorus stuff? I have heard of a new Gold Kid stuff called Super Record.... But Chorus? What's that?

Ti fasteners don't rust. I have never regretted my purchase of Record. I have regretted (out of pure vanity) purchases of Chorus.

There will be no functional differerence. But why show up at a Ferrari show with a Porsche?

please...I know times are tight since i'm sure you also just bought your fall williams-selyem allotment, but $60, really? who is the retailer? for that price I'll move to 11 as well

The price for the Record 5-piece is lower than any I've seen, but the Chorus price is not. Comobike has the 5-piece Chorus 11 speed priced at $645, while the Record is $897. The Record price seems a bit hard to believe, for 5 pieces.

I'm going to try one of my bikes with a 4-piece changeover group, using my 2008 QS FD.

The big price differences are at the RD, and cassette. I chose Chorus cassettes that are $100 cheaper and last longer.

Did I already mention, don't forget the chain tool?

Why did they cancel the order? They don't have them in stock?

The order was not shipped because they didn't have the 11-25 cassette. I cancelled the order, after waiting for two weeks. Since my card was charged, I assumed the order was shipped. I got no e-mail notifying me of the back-ordered item. My card should not have been charged while I waited on back-ordered parts, but they say they'll reimburse me fully. Somehow I doubt I'll recover the currency exchange fee, but we'll see. Overall, not a happy customer.

A lack of stock is still the main problem at most dealers. Some have received no 2009 parts at all and others are filling preorders with whatever stock they get. The parts are selling as soon as they are stocked and it's hard for the dealers to keep track of what they have, if it's not all done by computer.

A Record rear der is $60 more at wholesale than a Chorus derailleur.
You're basically getting the upgrade of the rest of the kit for free at those prices.

Campag mentioned to me that Record is selling below expectations.
Most orders have been for Super Record, or Chorus 11.

Comobike doesn't seem to be having a sale. In fact, they don't even have any stock on 2009 Record 11 speed.

The prices I added up this morning came to $897 for a Record 11 speed, 5-piece group.

I've had a preorder in place at Comobike since late August. No parts yet.

Dave:

fabio at comobike said that my order would be available in 10 days. If it is, great, if not no worries here. I am getting a chorus cassette as it is all steel. Do not see the need for a few Ti cogs at a big upcharge.

At just a $60.00 differential it was likely an easy-peasy decision to opt for Campagnolo Record in that situation.
Congratulations on a great price score.

What's amazing now is the price difference from 2008 Record to 2009 11 speed Record.

It's like nothing! Too bad there isn't a med cage and 13-29 out for the 11's or I'd be all over a set or three!
