OK, so my PP396’s are clicking after 10k miles and I think an overhaul is in order. BUT I can’t figure out how to get those #$%& plastic spindle caps off! Do they unscrew? Do they just snap off? Are they sneakily made so that by the time you get them pried off they’ll be so torn up you have to buy new pedals? :crap: :crap: :crap:

I'm not sure what you mean. To overhaul a Look, use the special tool to remove the inner (nearest the crank arm) threaded lock nut and the spindle just comes out, exposing the bearings/bushings for service/replacement. No need to pry anything.

. . . a special tool? Is this something that would have come with the pedals? Here's the plastic collar I'm talking about.

My campy pro-fits use a 20mm box wrench to pull out the axle...you might see what fits on yours. It's hard to see the shape of the nut on your pedals.

Dave, there is a tool...but you do not need it. Infact, you can carefully clamp them into a lightly padded vise and unscrew. Remember that the left pedal will unscrew righty loosey! The fit is not super tight so don't use alot of force.

To repack these clean the bearings and spindle than put a shot of Phil Wood grease or Shimano bearing grease (green) in there and assemble. Excess grease will push out through the cap. Don't fiddle with the nylon lock bolt.

If none of this makes sense send them to me and I'll fix em up.

Thanks very much for the info. I figured they come off, but just didn't know if they unscrew or pop off or what. BTW, those aren't my pedals in the pic. I just cribbed the photo off eBay to show the pieces.

The tool used to come in the box, I think. But you can do the vise thing or use channel locks, if you are careful. I would recommend ordering new bearings and bushings. They are cheap and will make the pedals act as new.

. . . where I would order these parts? . . .

My LBS gets them for me. I would imagine that whoever imports Looks would also have them available through them, directly.

Dave, I'm a cheap mechanic so forgive me if I suggest you just repack the pedals and see if that's all they need before you spend. It's a 10 min. job.
