Anyone with first hand experience setting these up? Me and my tech gurus here in Eugene are stumped. There is absolutely no friction in the system, the cable slides through ever so smoothly. But I can not get the the bike to shift properly. On the smallest cogs it's slow and on the larger cogs it overshifts. It is such a cool system I hate to just scrap it.
Anyone else had this difficulty and what did you do to fix it?

IF you have campagnolo, it will shift flawlessly. If you use shimano, it sucks. The loop required puts alot of stress on the shifter. If you look at pictures of team telekom bikes, you will notice most of them use standard derailer housing up front, and use nokon for the rear housing, and for the brakes. One other hint, use the shimano wire, and the nokon housing, and it works a little better. The german wire is a larger diameter.
Good luck.

Well, I am using Shimano. Good observation.
The reason I thought I'd try it is the shop owner had his set up that way, with DA 10, and his worked flawlessly. I'm not going to sacrifice shifting performance for coolness factor. If I can't bring the cables back tucked in, I really don't see much point in doing it. Yes they are a bit lighter (100g or so)but I really don't care much about that.
There's another mechanic in the shop tomorrow. Maybe he can fool with it.
I've set up Nokon cables several times on Dura Ace and had no problem at all. I have run into a couple odd bugs with the setup, but what you are probably dealing with is the following: The lead heads on the shifter cables are slightly taller than the standard Shimano cables and can sometimes have sharp edges. This causes them to jam slightly as they crank around inside the STI lever as you shift and can cause some of the problems you get (actually, you likely had this happen based on the symptoms you describe -- it can happen with a correctly adjusted cable tension, and it can also prevent you from getting the tension correct to start with). The solution is to use a grinder or file to finish off the heads and round them slightly. The Nokon cables are slightly larger diameter than replacement Shimano shifter cables, or I'd just suggest changing cables.

I'll look into that tomorrow. Thanks.

Use short runs of housing. IMO it looks like krap.
