He had 2 more gears than the others:

1) 11-speed.
2) He's from the Veneto! :)

He may well have been using the 2009 centaur levers, which have the new hood shape, but are ten speed. Apparently not too many of the teams are using the 11 sp stuff as yet. Most that look like they have the new gear, are combining the new centaur levers with a 2008 record 10 sp drivetrain.
