I'm riding a 29er, with 28cc vittoria cross tires, and I have disc brakes. What fenders would you recommend? I have a set of bike planet hardcore fenders, and the front is a little short....I need full coverage!!

Using the bike to commute to school daily, and don't want to get my shoes or slacks dirty. Here's a pic, just for reference....the fenders need to be a few inches longer in the front.

That built-in mudflap is worthless. I like SKS/Esge P45 fenders, with homemade mudflap.

You can see from this photo that SKS fenders have more coverage:

Personal Peave: why don't fender manufacturers provide either longer fenders or proper extension flaps?

I've made multiple versions. Current ones are bullet proof. Made from a backpacking cutting board, available at any sporting goods store (I got my at Joes in Portland, OR). I mount them on the inside of the fender with stainless screws and Nyloc nuts. I used a small propane torch to curve the section that is inside to match the fender shape.

Been through 2 full winters (commute every day and rided 52 weeks a year) with zero problems. These are on Planet bike fenders, much more durable than the several sets of SKS I had previously.

Definitely, they shouldn't even have put the mud flap on....it serves no functional purpose.

The SKS looks plenty long enough. I have been also looking at the Planet Bike Cascadia version.....the flap seems longer, has anyone tried those?

These hold up well, and give great coverage. The mud flaps are my custom additions. My riding buddies and I have used them the last three winters in the PNW.

I bought the colored Soma Fab Euro-fenders for my Taylor cross bike and regret it!

The problem is the front is too short and has the same stupid mudflap that curves up. For what?@!#$ Further, the mounting tab on the front fender is bolted to the underside of the fender and has a cutout for it to allow the tab to be mounted on the front brake hole. The problem is you now have this opening that allows water to spray up on to the bottom of the headset! Who's idea was that? I ended up putting tape both over and under the dumb hole. Idiots.

The only thing cool about the Soma fender is the color. I have the gold color that matches the gold panels on my black bike. Makes me look fancy....

One of these Fenders would work for me. http://www.fender.com/gilmour/guitar.php :p

Get some Velo Orange Aluminum fenders. They're long and they only cost $42

I have the Cascadia on my CAD 5 and like them.
Easy to install and provide good coverage over Pasela 28s.
The front flap is a little torn after 6 months of (ab)use, but still firmly attached.
I heard about 'em from coylifut on this list and had the LBS order for me -
they liked 'em enough to stock regularly.

Cut out the bottom of an old bottle, cut it in half. Drill a hole into the side about 2 cm from the top (the narrow end, which happens to match the radius of most fenders). Drill a hole in the end of the fender. Insert small bolt through both items and secure with a nut. You might round the corners of the bottle to appear "sleek." Done.

SKS on my camper.

The Berthoud's are well made and very good looking. SKS are real easy to get on and off. Probably the best made plastic part for your bike.

Unless looks are important - and there is nothing wrong with wanting looks - go with the SKS. For looks, Berthoud.

Speaking of looks, my city bike originally had Honjos. They are beautiful and light. Velo Orange has an extra long version that barely needs a mud flap. For Chicago streets at least, I found the aluminum Honjos much to frail. Every now and them street debris would get caught between the tire and fender. The fender would lose its battle with the debris and I would wind up spending a lot of time getting it back in the correct position.

No such problems with the (admittedly heavier) Berthouds.

How about these for full coverage? They're the Honjo "Le Paon" (aka "Zeppelin")fenders, and their width is correct for 700x30, so they ought to work on yours, assuming there's a way to attach them. I got them from Velo Orange. $88 the set, with hardware.
http://velo-orange.com/ho45lepaorze.html VO has plenty of less expensive metal fenders as well.
