I have an older D'ace 7400 hub with a Hyperglide freehub that is Uniglide compatable( threading on inside and outside of freehub body). I am trying to run a 7800 cassette, it goes on properly and when tightened there is still to much play. I tried using 2 7800 spacers instead of one but then I can not get the lockring threads to catch. Are narrower spaces available?

Guidance needed and appreciated.

what size is the smallest cog?

I recall that the 11t doesn't work, 12 and larger do.
you need the special 7800 spline pattern freehub for 11's.

I am trying to run a 12-25 7800 cassette, think if I had a slightly larger spacer it would work, or an additional very thin one. I was under the impression that if the cassette fit on the body it should work. I think the 11 tooth vs. 12 tooth has to do with not using a lockring, but using an external cog that threads over the freehub body.

Pretty sure Grant is correct on this one. I'm still running 8 speed on a Uniglide compatible freehub on my set of tubular wheels. Eleven tooth cogs were not available back then. You can use a 12 with no problem.

Interestingly, I had a set of OPs built up with Ultegra 6600 hubs two years ago, and an 8-speed 12 works fine there, too. Go figure.

ok, you should be able to make it work.
I'm thinking that you might need to put 1 small spacer, like 1 or 2 mm's
on the body first, (over there by the spokes) and then slide the cogs on.
You can't mess with the spacers between the cogs, for obvious indexing reasons.

Lot's of info on Shimano stuff, I use Harris online to answer tech questions all the time.

Thanks for the link -had looked into it before the original post. Put 2 spacers on - both are 7800 spacers which now fit (first time I tried this I was unable to engage lockring). Cassette is nice and snug - not much clearance to drive side dropout however. After adjusting the der. went out for an hour, some skipping which I am sure can be eliminated by readjusting the der.

Now the problem - when the wheel spins I get a ticking noise, if I take off the cassette and remount the wheel with no cassette no noise. Did not try mounting just one spacer and seeing if the noise is there, as this would nmake the cassette loose.

Any ideas?

Thanks
