View Full Version : OT - Best Rock & Roll Cover ?

Louis

OK, now that the silly conventions are over and we have nothing interesting to talk about, and because we haven't had a good music thread recently, what do you think the best Rock and Roll cover ever is? My thoughts:

#1 Hendrix doing "All Along the Watchtower" (Dylan)

#2 Metallica doing "Turn the Page" (Bob Seger)

Any others?

Yeah, that was great, but I think to qualify for greatest cover, the cover should be better than the original. And nobody could improve on Hendrix playing Little Wing. So I have to go with Jimi's version of Watchtower also. I once thought the CSNY version of Woodstock was better than Joni's and its definitely more rocking, but I came to like Joni's version better. Then again, her's wasn't rock 'n roll and CSNY's arguably was. God, this is confusing...

the cover song should improve upon the original, not just retrace its steps. Too many "artists" today are lazy and use other songwriters work as fillers on their collections. One example of an improved or otherwise impressive different version of a song, ATMO, is John Gorka's cover of Dylan's "Girl of the North Country" Girl (http://www.amazon.com/Girl-Of-The-North-Country/dp/B000S41QCO)

The original is also awesome, sung as a duet with Dylan and Johnny Cash on "Nashville Skyline"...a fabulous album, ATMO.

The absolutely perfect "Back in Black" by Hayseed Dixie (say it fast three times – better yet: once should do.)

There was also an amazing version of "MONEY" (Motown's first hit, I believe) covered by everyone from the Beatles to Smashing Pumpkins to the Kingsmen (Louie Louie) to Led Zeppelin to the Doors to Pearl Jam and of course the Miracles and the Supremes and less of course Josie and the Pussycats but none of them compare to the once heard and never forgotten rev by the Flying Lizards, in, probably, about 1977 (the second best year in Rock n Roll.)

Does everyone agree with me?

Find it if you can. I wouldn't know where to look.

IMO either improve, or give you a totally new / different take on a song you're very familiar with and have taken for granted for say, X number of years. Obviously it also has to be good, not just different. (kind of like my Celine Dion / AC/DC example :p )

Yeah, it was originally recorded by Patti - Bruce never put it out on an album until maybe a later live album? I always loved her version and figured nothing could ever top it. Then I heard Bruce play it live in Tucson in '78. I've never felt a higher energy musical performance than his live version of that song. I literally worried that the roof was gonna explode, people would start to levitate, etc. It was well beyond sublime. At the time, I thought he was covering it, but later learned he co-wrote it. If it had been a cover, that one would have been it for all time.

Yep, as I recall, the first Bruce recording of BTN was on the Live/1975-85 release. That version was recorded at the Nassau Coliseum on December 28, 1980. No problemo, Climb. Cool thing about this song is that it has been covered in so many different ways. Patti's version is bold & raw, I love it. If you haven't already, delve into some of her other work. Definitely edgy, moody & best enjoyed late at night while in a dark room and a good beverage.

Close. Very close.

The winner is, however, this cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8fORGIhbAc) of the song, which is beyond outstanding.

Thank you all for playing and good night.

Tip the waitress.

Completely!

Dead Kennedys-Viva Las Vegas (a slightly skewered  version of the Doc Pomus original)

The Dickies-Paranoid (Black Sabbath in double speed)

Sex Pistols w Sid on vocals tearing up "My Way." I always thought it was a Sinatra song, but Google reveals that Paul Anka wrote it. Completely subverts the original.

How 'bout the Dickies version of Silent Night?

The Howdy Doody theme.

Just as musically twisted as the premise of that show.

I know that this is a long thread, but there should at least be one song by the blues brothers...

White Lion covering RADAR LOVE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVF5ZkG20dQ) originally by Golden Earring.

Storm Troopers of Death did it better.

Whoops, I meant the Judas Priest version of Daimonds and Rust.
