I'm going to be in DCA on Monday afternoon and wanted to find out if a guy (me) who shows up in DCA looking to rent a 60cm-ish road bike and go for a 2 or so hour ride on the wod trail or anyplace else for that matter...

What do I need to do?

Is this possible?

Or should I plan on something else?

Thanks!

Erik

Call Spokes Etc in Va, they are a serotta dealer and you can find them in the dealer locator, call their Vienna store which is on the trail going towards leesburg. Speak with Jeff Fisher who reads these boards when he's bored and have him fix you up with a rental. Tell him I said hey !!!

Yes, but he said DCA -- the code for Reagan National Airport. That's a long way from Vienna, and right on Metro and the Mount Vernon Trail.

You could take Metro to Alexandria - King St. Station, take a shuttle bus to Old Town, and walk here http://www.wheelnuts.net/ or here http://www.bigwheelbikes.com/rentals.htm and ride on the Mount Vernon trail.
Both shops are within a few blocks of the bike trail.

If you mean this monday, September 1, be advised that Metro won't be operating trains between National Airport and Braddock Rd. due to track maintenance. They say they will be running shuttle buses.

"This weekend, Metro will undertake a major track rehabilitation project on the Blue and Yellow lines that will heavily impact service between the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Braddock Road Metrorail stations. The stations will remain open, but the track between them will be closed, so customers using the Blue and Yellow lines should add 30 minutes into their travel plans to allow to transfer to a shuttle bus to get through the affected area."

You probably already know this, but there is a great loop that is ~17 miles by linking the w&od with the custis:

I ride it every time I am in DC for work...

That's a nice little loop -- we ride it every Friday morning at 6:30, but a first time visitor, on his own, should know that there's a couple of miles in the Shirlington area where the path runs out and you sorta have to pay attention to signs to stay on track if you don't already know where you're going -- it's not complicated, but there are several little twists and turns, a sidewalk overpass, and so forth, and we don't want the poor guy going around in circles in fairlington village or someplace.

It's not entirely obvious once you hit Glebe Rd. either. That's one reason why I thought it made more sense to head south on the Mount Vernon Trail, especially if he was renting a bicycle in Old Town Alexandria.

So, how'd your attempt to ride from National Airport work out? Did you have a good Labor Day weekend?

You bet. We had perfect weather here in metro DC. sc53 posted some pictures she took on Sunday's Shenandoah Rustic (mixed paved/unpaved, on both sides of the Shenandoh River between Rt 7 and Rt 50): http://gallery.me.com/sc53/100188
