was searching the net for digital camera info cuz my elph has stopped working. found this. anybody have an idea if it is a deal? I've been looking at digital slr cameras and had a bit of sticker shock.

Canon Loyalty Program Offers Little-Known Deal | Photography Tips, Digital Photography 101 at Cheapshooter

Stuck with outdated or broken equipment? Looking to make the jump to a digital SLR? Canon has a little-known loyalty program that could make the purchase of your next camera quite a bit cheaper.

If you're shooting with a current Canon camera, you can upgrade it to a refurbished, newer model for a significant discount. Canon offers the following models as upgrade options:

- SD850 IS $150
- G9 $250
- EOS XT (with kit lens) $275

Any of the following Canon models qualify for the upgrade deal as long as they're out of their current warranty period:

S10, S30, S40, S45, S50, S60, S100, S200, S230, S300, S330, S400, S410, S500, SD110, SD200, SD400, SD550, SD600, SD700-IS, SD800-IS, SD1000, S1-IS, S2-IS, G2, G5

This deal isn't advertised, and you have to call Canon customer support at 866-443-8002 to get started. You'll need to provide the serial number off your current digital camera in order to qualify. Each refurbished camera comes with a six month warranty.

Funny, I used the loyalty program just last week. My wife's A80 went on the fritz so I got her a refurb (but warrantied) SD1000 for pretty much half price.

I think the program works well because I liked her SD so much that I bought a new one for myself as soon as I saw hers... In addition to the new 40D I got last month.

There are a lot of new Canons in the house.

My canon stopped working recently too. As far as I can tell, canon has an epidemic of poorly manufactured cameras that don't last very long. Personally, I'm going to try another brand this time.

Well, I wouldn't say that. Recently I read that Canon has shipped it's 100 millionth digital compact camera http://www.dpreview.com/news/0808/08081901canon100million.asp

There are bound to be a few issues and they obviously stand behind their products.
BTW-I'm an ex pro who was a long time Nikon (and Hasselblad & Sinar) shooter so I'm not just a Canon fanboy.

+1 for the G9.....best all-around point and shoot camera on the market... you'd have to go DSLR to beat it.

I just used an Olympus E420.....great starter DSLR, and the smallest digital SLR on the market, only slightly larger than the G9.

Well, McDonald's has sold 100 billion hamburgers--and they suck.

How's that? With one year warranties? Or charging $150 at their repair centers to even look at a camera?

I beat the tar out of my camera. I felt like I got my moneys worth out of it.

One digital camera feature I believe is very helpful is non-proprietary batteries...especially when traveling.
It is nice to be able to step into a drugstore and to purchase fresh batteries on-the-fly if taking lots of pictures on a vacation.

Go for the G-9 or the XTi. I have the XTi and it is wonderful (factory refurb as well). The EF-S 18-55 kit lens is getting great reviews. For reviews and info go to kenrockwell.com. He's a nikon guy, but there is a ton of good info on Canon cameras and lenses.

I have several friends who swear by their G-9's - won't consider a DSLR because the G-9 does almost all of it, is smaller and lighter.

Cheers!

SD850 IS $150
G9 $359
XT $299

since G9 is $470 at costco (with SD card) no reason to jump on this now

I really enjoy my G9. I've had it for a few months now, and still learning the ins and outs. Knowing the limitations of your camera is very important.

Thanks pete, I'm wasn't happy with the lighting in either photo, but thought the color contrast was great, I should have adjusted the shooting settings more, but was just messing around in my front yard.

I'm not sure what the bug in the second pic is, either. Found it on one of our sunflower buds. Does anyone else know??
