View Full Version : Has anyone ever seen a frame this rusted?

I'm wondering if it would even be possible to fix it up enough for a decent repainting - the rust on the seat tube looks to have penetrated the metal pretty deeply.

My $0.02

I would stay far away from that one. Unless you're looking for something to refinish to hang on the wall as art, I'm guessing that there is at least a 50% chance the structural integrity of that frame is compromised in one or two places.

I've seen similar (in terms of brand and style, not condition) bikes offered here by long-time and trusted posters for $500-$700. Frames that are in like-new condition. Why take a chance, even at $200?

Man, it looks like it needs a new seat tube! I'd stay away..

Man, I've owned and ridden some really rusty frames, but that one's hurting. If its Waterford built and 753, its at least ten years old (Waterford stopped building Rivs around '97 IIRC. Too bad, its a pretty frame and I love that orange. But I suspect you'd have to spend more to replace tubes and repaint than to just get a new frame. That one looks like toast.

great yard ornament. I would suggest staying away from that much rust.

One would expect to see a bicycle that appears in that condition to be hanging in a T.G.I.Friday's, Houlihan's, Bennigan's, or similar type of restaurant with lots of "props" as part of the decor. ;)

The ad copy said that there are "no cracks, dents or repairs"...
NO REPAIRS? NO KIDDING!

you might save yourself $25-50 having this one repaired instead of buying a new frame.

You see a great deal of rust on the outside. Who knows how bad it is in the inside? I wouldn't consider that frame. As stated herein, there are many very good steel frames, that need no painting or repair, that can be bought for several hundred dollars. Why bother witha very questionable frameset. I would not buy it at any price. Not worth it.

I happen to be wearing a True Fab t-shirt at the moment. Yeah, that "rust" finish would be a great urban camo--for the urban type.

Back to the rust bucket on the bay. Peeps are bidding on it...maybe they all have restaurants needing decor. I hate like hell throwing stuff out, but I'd not waste beer money on that one.

my favorite part is "The frame looks worse than it really is".
