A recent thread by Kevin asked for recommendations on bikes for his trainer. I gather Serotta told him he could use his Ottrot, but he couldn't ride out of the saddle. It never occured to me that this could be a problem, but I can see why it might. For the last several months I have had my Trek 5200 on the trainer (something inside just wouldn't let me put my Legend TI on it; call me a snob). Does anyone think this is a problem. Last thing I want to do is trash the frame or BB on this bike. Thanks.

I would contact Trek via email. Here's one I sent to Trek:

Hi,

I've heard some conflicting stories about the use of trainers with bikes. I have a 2001 5200 and am looking into getting a trainer for the winter months. If I get a high quality trainer, such as a cycleops fluid 2 or the 1up trainer, can that potentially be damaging to the frame? Will it void the warranty? Please let me know your thoughts and experiences with trainers and OCLV bikes. Thanks!

Ben

Here's the response:

Ben thanks for emailing us! No, the trainers will not damage your frame.
Have a nice day!

Not that informative, but at least if you do have a problem then you can make a legitimate warranty claim.

Btw, i decided not to get a trainer and just ride the stationary bikes at the gym. at least i'm sweating on someone else's stuff!

Just use rollers...
You may break your neck, but you won't hurt the bike!

I wouldn't put a nice bike on a trainer. The sweat problem alone would scare me. You might want to try a local flea market. Around here there are lots of once nice but now outdated bikes (Univega, Specialized, Trek) for sale in the $50.00 range that you could slap on a trainer with no worries.
