I'm afraid that after the first ride on my Legend (April of this year) I have not ridden the steel bike that was my sole fair-weather road bike for the past ~8 years --a tig welded but beautiful old blue and yellow LeMond Zurich. I basically shrank and stiffened my way out of the LeMond (age-related changes), and as a result of its perfect fit and perhaps the design and materials, the Legend is soooo much more comfortable.

However, I have not abandoned steel! I have been on Dave Kirk's wait list since last winter and have spent an inordinate amount of time fantasizing about what that bike is going to be. I fell in love with lugged steel in my 20s when I shared an apartment with 2 serious bike racers for a number of years --one raced with a Masi and the other a Cinelli --both custom fitted and built by the great masters themselves. Nearly all of my riding in those days (~40 years ago) was commuting since I didn't own a car, but I also had the pleasure of using one of my apartment-mates training bikes, which was a delight in comparison to my series of clunky old commuters that kept getting stolen or, in one case, wrecked.

Needless to say pictures of my Kirk are going to be all over the internet once it arrives.

Thanks for asking Smiley!

Lew

The Bilenky cracked once; I had it repaired.

The Trek has pinholes in the top tube, but it won't die.

The Ala Carte is cracked 30% around the underside of the downtube, at the headtube end. I'm hoping it survives D2R2 next weekend.

I still love steel.

Despite my screen name, I do love my Della Santa lugged beauty; always amazed when I ride it following a few rides on carbon. Both are great but the value of DS really shines through. Contemplating either a Bohemian or an IF Crown Jewel..

IMHO, it is about the builder, not so much the material..

New all steel CDA (Coeur D'Acier). Great bike thus far. Unfortunately, I have not ridden it very much. I want to do a direct comparison between it and my other bike- Ottrott ST. When I do, I am planning on writing a comparison of the two on the forum. It will be over the same course with the same wheels and tires. I think that the CDA will do quite well in the comparison. Probably better ride quality, perhaps not quite as efficient in tramsmitting pedal input into forward motion.

DeKerf Team ST Mountain Bike. Reynolds 853. Soft tail design. Springy and very light about 23lbs or so. Chris builds beautiful frames. Wouldn't trade her for anything.
Scapin S8(bought from jghall) and not built up yet. I think it is an 04. Looking forward to it but it'll take me a bit to get it together. Lots of shaped niobium tubing with a wound up carbon fork on the front end.

An early Kona Explosif for the wife.

allz I gots is the beater Bridgestone 400 (complete with spigot (plumber's joke) and the very recently purchased Ebisu a replacement for the returned-to-prior-owner Serot.

Weird, but my son has the notion the Ebisu is for him. I keep telling him, "Sorry sir...but you need a bigger frame, like a 62cm." Anyone who can readily beat you up, you call sir.

My 2008 Specialized Tarmac Elite as I rode it this morning other than I have changed the carbon fiber seatpost to a Thomson Elite; took off the firm and very lightly padded Specialized Toupe saddle before using it and am using a slightly more padded Specialized BG saddle; and the shop upgraded the wheels at no cost to a Mavic Aksium wheelset instead of the Mavic CXP22 wheelset that came standard.

Oops, sorry, was so used to replying to the steel bike ownership thread for so many years that I did so this time out of habit ;)

I have a 30th anniversary Serotta frame. I believe they produced 15 of them. It is all Campy Record with Zipp bars and a new set of Zipp 202's. I just got a Orbea 09 Orca which is also very nice, but the Serotta seems to be the quicker machine----------

Pegoretti Marcelo-the nicest riding bike I have ever been on. It excels at everything.

Waterford 'cross- Reynolds 531 goodness; its my fixed gear commuter. With 32mm Paselas the ride is dreamy.

Santana Noventa- Niobium steel, comfy, but maybe not as stiff as one might prefer.

Waterford 1150-just a frame and fork now, would somebody buy this frame?
Its too nice to just hang in my storage shed.

Current group:

Grandis Overmax Light
Sachs Road
Pegoretti Palosanto
Colnago Master Piu (Gilco - looks more like a Master Light)
(Alberto Masi) Milano 31.4 Volumetrica Touring Geometry
Masi Pista (Torelli era)
mid-1970s Masi Gran Criterium

... and one more that's not quite finished:

Kelly Knobby-X

... and one more that I might rebuild some day:

3Rensho Katana-S

Odd stuff about four of them:

The rarest of the batch might be the Milano. I've heard (but cannot confirm) that only 6 were imported with touring geometry. The Colnago has odd gemoetry as well. It has a 52 c-to-t seat tube, but a 54cm top tube. The Grandis was one of the last few (possibly the last one) imported into the U.S. The Gran Crit is the same one (s/n matches) that appears in Masi's 1978 brochure, but the frame was reportedly brazed some years earlier (been told by Eisentraut, but who knows?) and not stamped with a s/n and painted until shortly before Masi left Carlsbad. It may not be true, but it's a heck of a story.

Tom

I want to know who out there is riding Steel and not giving up on their steel bikes.

Er, well... I've got a 1985 Bridgestone 600, and I'm in the queue to get a Sachs, and assuming my wife doesn't kill me first I'd like to eventually replace the Bridgestone with a Kirk or an Ellis or a Spectrum or a Serrota...so I'm clearly not "giving up" on steel.

But I'm also not "giving up" on carbon fiber: Should my CF bike ever **** the bed (or spontaneously explode) you can bet I'll replace it with another CF bike in a nanosecond.

Wow. Who knew! Seems like all I see these days are fancy shmancy carbon bikes... Great thread!

I'm trying to keep it real by hoarding just a few bikes. Two are steel:

Mid 80's Scapin -- Columbus MX (?) oval tubing
Dennis Kilfoy custom 650c -- Columbus SL/SLX

The Scapin is being tidied up a bit and will soon have new NOS brakes, levers, wheels (replacing the tubies) and cables.

Here's a pic of the Scapin:

Ok, here’s a picture of the Bob Jackson in its current configuration with
a Campy C-Record drive train and Mavic Open Pro rims..
According to Bob Jackson’s records the frame was built in 1978 and refinished in 1984 at which time the bottle cage mounts and the top tube cable guides were added.

Unfortunately the PX-10 is currently out for a much needed repaint.
I’ll post some pics upon its return.

I am in the process of building up my first steel bike since my Bridgestone RB400 that I rode and raced on in highschool.

Its a Carl Strong that will come in at or under 16 lbs and is an absolute beauty. Its dark blue metalalic paint, Edge carbon fork, Record 10, white FSA bars and stem, Masterpiece post, Toupe saddle. Question is, do I send the fork to Spectrum to match the paint to the frame?

What I listed then

<<
Derek Bailey 753 Custom
Claud Butler 531C
Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra
Eddy Merckx MX Leader
De Rosa Professional
De Rosa Primato
Fausto Coppi Campionissimo
Dancelli Columbus MAX
Curtlo Custom CX - OX Platinum
Custom Carl Strong "Dirt Road" bike

Another Carl Strong on the way .............

This does not count the ones I no longer own.
>>

The MX leader is now gone.
The Dancelli is gone.
A Colnago Super I had is gone.
A Merckx 7-11 is gone.

In their place is yet another Carl Strong "Dirt Road Bike"

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QhwtCvS9cDE/SSuAgI2MUTI/AAAAAAAABV0/jBF5w250F6Y/s800/IMG_2924.jpg

I'm still working my through those I have to decide which ones will stay and which ones will go. There really are too many.

Now that I think about it, all my sleds are steel. All but one have steel forks, too. (Guess I think steel bikes just look and ride better with steel forks designed together with the frame).

Current lineup:

2001 Waterford allrounder (based on an RS-22)
Late 80s Land Shark (lugged Giro '88-ish replica)
1999 Yamaguchi aero road

1999 Surly Steamroller fixie cyclocross

Schwinn Paramount OS 5
Schwinn paramount OS 3 (wife's)

Perhaps the forum needs a "My Dream Steel" thread for all the steel bikes we would like to have, but don't yet own. A Colorado III, CDA or other Serotta would be on my list, as well as a Pegoretti, Merckx, Colnago, and SO many more! You gotta have a dream!

-- A Rocky Mountain Hammer that is pushing 10 years old. So much fun on the dirt

-- A Motobecane single speed- from the 70's- steel is real baby!

And also did a pacific coast bike tour on a mid-80's Bridgestone xo-2- fabulous bike!

Next on my list- a new steel mtb frame and a steel cross bike- maybe another indy?! :-)
