I have 9 speed ultegra now with a compact crank.

Do I need to buy a new front der and crank?

Can I just buy the brifters, cassette, r. der. and chain?

I've got 9 and 10 speed groups--I wouldn't "upgrade" until I wore out the 9 speed stuff. There's not much improvement ATMO.

There were threads some time ago where it was stated that a new rear der. was not necessary when going from Shimano 9 to 10. Or was it that a 10 speed rear der. will work with 9? Here are the threads:

Ken speaks the truth!
I have my "camp" bike set up with all Ultegra 9 speed.
I rode it 35 hilly miles yesterday after spending the rest of the week on 10 speeders.
The 9 speed stuff works flawlessly and there is no way I really miss having the one extra gear.
Want to blow some dough on your bike? Get some nice wheels, you will probably notice a difference. Keep the 9 speed stuff til it dies a natural death.
