More for city riding/ rambling on a non cleated pedal. should have a walkable non slip sole.
i dont really like mountain bike shoes as they tend to be heavy and bulky.
spotted something like this NIKE spin trainer but it seems to be women specific

Shimano used to make a nice touring bike shoe, iirc.

IIRC Northwave has a spin shoe that might work for you

Actually to clarify, i only need the the back to be slimmer and not have the back heel clip my chainstays.

I'm wondering whether the surface area would be sufficient for regular pedals with toe clips and not cleated pedals

try getting some flat pedals and ride in shoes that you like with rubber soles that do not have large lugs. Boat shoes work well for me. Big lugs lock you into limited positions as they interlock with the pedals. You may be surprised how little pedalling efficiency you lose.
