Does anyone know of a source for a net that can be placed over the helmet to prevent bug infiltration through the vents? Last night's ride was terrible, having to stop every mile or so to clear the critters from my hair.

I got stung hard the other day on a twisty descent when a bee flew into my helmet. Worst was having to bring the bike to a stop on the shoulder of the road all the while getting tagged by the little bastard.

I have no idea why Bell/giro has not come up with some sort of after market liner net for their helmets. LAS has one for their lids and it looks awesome but their largest helmets wont fit my huge American head.

In the cooler months I always wear a cap under my helmet but not now and it's amazing how many times on a ride I have things flying into the vents.

I never wear a helmet without a cotton (or in winter, wool) cap under it. Keeps me warm in winter, absorbs sweat in summer, and shields my eyes from rain and sun.

I use a "doo rag" or skull cap (coolmax) or a similar cover. Mine is not for bugs but to keep sun from steaking my bald head... (and it keeps bug out too)

The Spiuk Nexion Helmet has a removeable bug net that is held inside the via velco fastners. This is a nice feature as you can remove it to wash.

Someone on another forum posted that she had a helmet with net over the vents that she thought was really cool for keeping out the bugs. Then a bee came in from the side, or somewhere other than the netted vent and couldn't get out because all the vents were netted and now she things netted vents are stupid.

Just passing this along,

Jenn

I was hoping for something a little less geeky, but that'd work. Thanks.

Try throwing a sheet of saran wrap over the outside and or the inside of the helmet. There are a few helmets out there that come with the net.

Various Uvex models -- incuding this one -- seem to fit the bill:

Years back, I used to see a few brands of helmets offered in Europe that had built in mesh screens, just at the forward facing vents - specifically to keep bugs out. I have been stung on the head more times than I can count. It sucks.
I have often considered gluing in my own custom mesh windows as an option.

I wear a cycling cap under the helmet year round - "Try it - You'll love it - Its a way of life"*

*kudos to Frank Zappa for this atmo**

Rudy Project helmets have a nice mesh. I'm thinking of seeing if I can buy just the net and put it in my Giro. I recently tried the high end Rudy - comfy but it weighs almost twice my atmos. I may check out the Kontact + model though - good review on cyclingnews.
