Good News - cycling is spreading like wild-fire at my office. This is a new job for me, just started last winter. I commute 3 or 4 days a week. Since I started here, 3 others have started too! They come and ask questions about various things cycling and all are generally stoked. Yahoo!

Now - got a new one on the hook and he has some limited riding back-ground from the 80's. He wants to go buy a new bike (soon). $2K is his bike budget (not including accessories, helmet, pedals, etc.)

Wants a road bike - not entry level. Is keen to the Cannondal Six 13-3 (Dura-Ace/ Ultegra/ carbon/ aluminum). That bike sits on the shelf at $2K.

Any other complete bikes out there that you are a fan of?
He'll likely shop the big 4: Trek, Specialized, C-Dale or Giant - unless he sees ????

Thanks!

he could do a whole lot better going pre-owned. "Used" seems to have too many negative connotations.

I might toss Felt into the list. Haven't looked recently, but a few years ago there was a lotta' bang for the buck there! Might be worth a look.

That is great news. I am often asked the same question. Competitive Cyclist has some fantastic closeout deals right now including the 2007 Ridley Excalibur/SRAM Rival Complete Bike for $1999.00, and a BMC frame for $1095. Both fantastic bikes.

Cervelo Soloist Alu, new with Ultregra, for $2k. A screaming fast bike at a great price point.

His money
Felt!

Reason #1. They offer great bang for the buck.

Reason #2. Fairly new, US owned pro team sponsor. Assuming he gets a decent fit, your friend can't go wrong in that price range. Put his money to work showing Felt a little love.

My money
Preowned from the classifieds here.

$2k is a crowded price point.

My vote: Lemond Buenos Aires (or any of the Triomphe Carbon series).

Why?

1) These can be bought from your Local Bike Shop
2 have a made-in-usa frame from the folks that have been making carbon for 10+
3) For an older bicyclist, LeMond will invoke memories of glory days
4) Last year for Lemond bikes (as we know them today)

+1

Would prefer the Centuar version from a couple years ago, but should be a great start for someone. I saw these marked down to $1,600 at LBS at the end of last season.
