I am heading to Gloucester, Massachusetts for the 4th of July weekend and would appreciate any riding route recommendations people in the know may have.

Put in @ Rockport, round Straitsmouth Island, South to Eastern Point, into the Harbor, up through the Annisquam, and around Halibut Point.

Oh, sorry - you meant on a bike, right?

here is a nice 25 mile loop ... just watch out for tourist traffic given the holiday

I was only there once, for the Eastern Tandem Rally in 1994. The back roads in the entire area were the most potholed roads I've ever seen. We were told they kept them that way on purpose, to keep the tourists out. If they're still that way, bring the bike that fits fattest tires you have, you'll need them.

if you get hungry along the way, or find yourself in need of a tube, I will be hanging out on the fried clam superhighway

Try to go around Rockport as well. Also past Ipswich, in Rowley, on 1A is very nice.

And if I'm not mistaken Old School's restaurant is at the intersection of 133 and 22!

I think I just found where I'm going for lunch when I drive from Boston to Portland in August.

If you are going to be around for more than 1 meal, I will be more than happy to recommend a few good places to eat in addition to The Village in Essex (old school's place).

More suggestions are always good, because we have to make the return trip as well. I already know about Hilltop Steak House. ;)

Paczki;

Right now the brisge on 1A over the Merrimack River is still closed for construction. There is a nice ride around the site that keeps you off Route 1 (you only have to cross it (Route 1 that is) twice on the way to Plum Island from Ipswich.

They say the bridge is going to re-open early, but they still haven't stated a date.

Restaurant looks good but it is going to be hard to convince my vegetarian brother and sister in law to go. Maybe the wife and I can sneak away.

You can stop in at Harborside Cycles on Main Street and they will be glad to give you route advice. Cycling around the Cape is very nice....make sure to go along the back shore and visit Eastern Point. Lots of places to poke in and around. Maybe I'll see you on the road...hope you have a fun visit.
