do any of y'all know if an ultegra 6500 fd will work with a narrower 10 speed chain? i would think it would be fine, but a 6600 wouldn't work so hot with a fatter 9 speed chain. am i correct for thinking this? thanks for any help.

I saved the cash and used the FD when I upgraded from 9 to 10.

that's what i figured... does it shift just as smooth as your 9 speed?

It has to travel a fraction of a milimeter further to shift. Probably take 2-3 mph off your average speed.

I have a 9S FD on my 10 speed bike, I haven't noticed any negatives.

I have done it with no issues... I may be completely wrong (hopefully someone will let me know if I am), but I think with the slightly wider 9 speed cage you will actually have incrementally less chain rub without having to trim the FD when cross chained.

Also,FYI... we (mostly me) were building my buddies new race rig with some like new 10 speed Ultegra bits. We ran into a small problem with the FD since the Ultegra was a 32mm clamp and the frame required a braze-on. I dug in my box of parts (which is woefully short on Shimano anything) and found a 9 speed Campy Veloce FD and it was either that or nothing. I put it on and set the limiters and he had ZERO issues shifting for the couple hundred miles he used it before we got a braze on Ultegra.

FWIW, I think Grant Petersen wrote that front derailers are so uncritical that you could almost use a stick. He amuses me. :)

The stick would be made of pacific coast driftwood and have a canvas cover. It would only cost $110.

I'm running an 8spd Record FD with a 9spd chain and Shimano STI and it shifts smoothe as butter, and I never have to trim.

10spd FD with 9spd chain would rub too much and require constant trimming. Maybe ok with barcon or dt shifters but not STI.

I'm using an old DA 8spd fd to shift a sram 1090r chain. It's on my tt bike so I am using bar end shifters. Old Mavic crankset too though the rings are new.
