Hi all,

I'm at 2300 miles on my first set of GP4000 tires. They have held up well in my estimation, but I'm hankering for some new shoes as the tread wears thinner and the cuts continue to accumulate. Right now, I plan to re-enlist with the GP4000 tires, but I have 2 decisions to make:

1) regular vs. black chili compound?

Is there any downside to the black chili compound? The only one I can think of is that, if the compound is 'tackier', it is thus more likely to have glass 'stick' to the tread and become embedded and thus flat the tire on subsequent revolutions of the tire. Anyone experienced this vs. the regular compound? I've been flat free for the last 850 miles on the regular compound here in CO. Looking forward to staying flat free. :)

2) 23 vs. 25?

I run my 23s at 100psi and it seems like a comfy combination. My riding is of the JRA variety at a pace of 15-18mph. Wheels are Campy Protons. Anyone want to talk me into 25s? Are 25s cooler than 23s for those in the know? ;) I am lightweight at 140lbs if that makes a difference.

Thanks,
Kent

Only downside is they stink horribly on the rollers. Never had a tire smell so wretched. Great on the road though.

I switched this year from "regular" GP4000 23's to "Chili" GP4000 25's and love the 25's...find they handle much better on our rough roads. Wouldn't go back.

The Chili version appears to be wearing better as well...although maybe that's the 25's with lower pressure...

Jeff,

What pressures did you run on the 23s? How about the new 25s?

Anyone measured the "23"s and "25"s to see how big they are.
I used to have some Conti "28"s that were 25s.

I'm back from a week in Vermont, lovely scenery and some broken
up roads, Gran Bois 30s are great when the pavement isn't.

ran the 23's at 110, run the 25's at 95

live in VT, yes some of the roads have taken a beating...

Bigger is ALWAYS better, IMHO. :)

Just bought my first pair of Chili 25's today. Will get back to you about the ride.

I've been using Black Chili 25's all spring. I weight 190 and run 95 in front and 100 in the rear. They only about 10 or 15 grams more than the 23s, and the ride is noticeably better, with no loss in speed. There are no downsides to using them instead of the 23s.

That chili is in all high end continental tyres as of 2007.5 models.

Had a flat (cut casing) on Victoria CX while at Ride the Rockies. Got a pair of 23mm Contis Chile from Bret at the Conti tent (which was next to the SEROTTA/MAVIC tent and put them on.

I was impressed with the ride. Additionally road 14 miles of hard pack going over Cottonwood Pass they did not experience any cuts. I like them as much as the VIctoria and they seem less cut prone.. Have about 400 miles on them now.

Pressure was the same 110.

ride report?

all I can say is that they ride like my favorite to this time - Victoria CX and that they seen to cut less. They are comfortable, corner well, and we will see as to longevity. Some of the racers out there can probably be more objective for I am just a young at heart road rider.

At 2300 miles on Campy Proton rims at 100psi, my 23s measure:

24.50mm front
24.00mm rear

Wow! That's a surprise.

Measured with all the accuracy that a Harbor Freight digital caliper can provide! (It has measured 68mm bb shells accurately in the past.)
