I am building my first set of tubi's and want some nice tires. What other brands should i be looking at? Maybe I should take a poll?

cheers,

Yo Kirk--it's a test--if you can't read the small text you're too old for their tires!

Maybe it's a Mac thing, or perhaps the small font makes the price look smaller.

The site is 100% Flash...yuck. I can read most of it OK using IE, but the ordering information (prices, sizes) looks kind of smeared.

I don't know about the site, but last week I played with some FMBs and some Schwalbe Ultremo tubs. The Ultremos looked fast and racerly. The FMB had that quality handcrafted classy look. The FMBs were more supple. I did not ride them, only touched them. Call Molly Cameron at the Veloshop in Portland. She had FMB and Dugast in stock hanging from the ceiling.

I checked out the FBM web site, they have some nice stuff. I will certainly check out Molly's shop once we get get back to the PNW.

I'd probably be more interested in the more readily available stuff from Veloflex, Challenge, Tufo, etc.

Cheers,

I personally have had horrible results with the Challenge Roubaix tire. Poor ride quality and flats easily. It seems like the tube slides inside the tire and the valve stem gradually and progressively angles until the tire flats. Yes, I glued the stink out of them. The base tape tore off the tire before coming off the rim.

Love the Veloflex, both Criterium and Roubaix. Just wish the Roubaix had a gumwall option. They ride great and wear pretty well, considering that I am running 195lbs these days.

I'd love to get some FMB's, they really aren't too much more than Veloflex, but they just weren't readily available when I put in my last big order. So, I'll run the Veloflex until they're gone. Then, I will try the FMB's

If you're using a mac

try hitting apple and the plus sign a few times---the universal apple make things bigger command.

Kirk--are you talking cross tubs or road? Hard to beat Veloflex or a Conti Steher on the road, cross FMB rules the roost...

Jason,

Road. Thanks, I'll check out he Veloflex site. I notice you're running the Roubaix. Are they a true 24mm tire?

Kirk,
I have mounted one pair of Dugast road tires and noticed a huge inconsistency in fit--one tire was tighter than a Tufo and the other looser than a used Clement silk with mileage on it. Veloflex or Vittoria. Continentals are noticeably less straight than those other two. Go Veloflex if the price won't take food out of your kid's mouth.

I like the Veloflex tubulars. The 23's I've got are really smooth.

I've bought a pair of Dugast's 27 (really 28.5 or so) for another bike that I'm having built and can't wait to see how they ride.

In another thread (i.e. do search), there was high praise for the FMB's (especially for cross) and some skepticism with Dugasts (since the company has changed hands or something).

Yes they measure a true 24. The ride isn't q-u-i-t-e as supple as a Criterium or Carbon (or Steher), but the durability and mileage are significantly better and still ride better than anything else I've been on...
