Great coverage on the new 2009 Campy 11 speed groups.
http://www.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?id=tech/2008/features/2009_campagnolo_jun08
The Super Record stuff looks incredible. I really like the shape of the new hoods and levers.
Does the world need an 11 speed group? Probably not, but based on the report it sounds like Campy actually improved shifting performance in the process.
I wonder if Super Record rear derrailuers will be available in both short and medium cage, or if the short cage can accomodate an 11-25 with 34/50 chain rings (my preferred setup)?
Looks like there may be a glut of Campy groups on the classified board in a few months.

What advantage will 11-speed give to those who don't need an 11t or even a 12t cog?
The current short cage will handle an 11-25 with a 50/34, so that should not change. With the initial cassette offerings, there is no 13-29, 12-29, 11-27 or 11-29, so a medium cage RD won't be needed. Might be a 2010 offering. I'd be surprised is there was only one cage offered with more wrap capacity, but all they'd need is another 4T of wrap to cover an 11-29. The current medium cage has a 36T wrap capacity, of 2T more than needed.
I'm also using a 50/34 with an 11-25. They only difference will be a 16T cog in the middle, but that will plug the one large gap.
I doubt I'll spend the extra bucks for Super Record - it's supposed to be about 17% more than Record ($350-400). I've seen a european website listing the SR 8 piece group at $2300. I'll probably do a Record/Chorus mix. No Ti cogs for one thing. The '08 Record crank is only 30-40 grams lighter and costs $200 more, so I chose Chorus for my compact crank.
I'll also be closely measuring the chainring tooth thickness to see if an 11 speed crank is really needed.

What advantage will 11-speed give to those who don't need an 11t or even a 12t cog? Then you can have closer ratios on the other end then if it suits you.
11 has always been one of my least favorite numbers. An ugly prime. Can't really explain it.

Then you can have closer ratios on the other end then if it suits you.It might be something to have a 13-29 with an 18t cog, but as Dave says, Campagnolo doesn't seem to be offering it.
What advantage will 11-speed give to those who don't need an 11t or even a 12t cog?
Absolutely none. There will NOT be closer cog spacing at the low end.
Current 11-21, 11-23, 12-23 and 12-25 cassettes just get one larger cog at the end. For some reason, the 11-25 got skipped since there will be no 11-27 in the initial offering.

The current short cage has a capacity of 27 or 29 teeth, depending on who you talk to, or so I thought.
An 11-25 (14t) with 34/50 (16t) is outside either of those ranges. I had trouble getting clean centering out of a short cage with a 12-25 and 34/50, figuring because it was at capacity. A medium cage solved the problem.
Did you do anyting insteresting to get your 11-25 to work well with the 34/50?

Two 'intense' groups – bye-bye to entry level
"For 2009, Campagnolo is dividing its range into two distinct categories: the three 11-speed groupset are deemed by Campagnolo to be for "Competition", while those lower in the range – Centaur and Veloce – are designated for "Intense Use" by people who may put in thousands of kilometres a year but don't actually race. Those lower groupsets in the range will remain at 10-speed but will share a number of the new design features of their "Competition" stablemates. Both will include the new shaped Ergopower levers, but with aluminium instead of carbon levers. Centaur will include an optional carbon chainset with the remainder in polished aluminium, while Veloce will be black anodised.
Campagnolo's entry-level Mirage and Xenon groupsets will be discontinued."
Now this is GOOD NEWS... a polished alloy Centaur group.

Campy RD instructions say that the short cage will work with a 50/34 and any cassette, except a 13-29. I have a medium cage that I previously used with a triple crank, so I've got a 36T wrap capacity. I use the same chain length that I did with a triple and I can use an 11-25 or even an 13-29 cassette.
The way to get the maximum wrap is to shift into the 34/12 and set the chain length as long as possible in this combination. If the chain hangs loose or rubs on the upper chain guide tab, you must shorten the chain by 1 inch.

I know what you mean, numbers bug me. There are too many of them.

I don't want to be picky but this must be the millionth Spinal Tap reference I have seen since Campy announced the new lineup. The first 10 times it was cute but now.... not so much.

Were there a lot of Bo Derek references when 10spd showed up?

WHY NOT!He says why, you say why not. Philosophical, perhaps, but not highly productive.

The finish of the Veloce levers that have been shown was a lot like current Mirage. A sort of flat black. Sram Rival will be losing the polished finish this year too.
I think Centaur will be keeping the carbon lever blades.
Hard times for fans of polished aluminium, unless you like Shimano.

What advantage will 11-speed give to those who don't need an 11t or even a 12t cog?Every rider can use an 11 or 12 provided they can get small enough chainrings. Maybe you should be asking why they don't make smaller rings. Instead of compact maybe super compact. ;)
An 11T cassette will beat one that starts with a 13T almost every single time if the overall gearing is kept similar. It's in the numbers; and apparently the engineers are starting to see it more clearly.

I fully expect the addition of an eleventh cog to add at least 10mph to my average speed or 30% more miles before I feel tired and at least 40 percent more happiness to my cycling life.

What happens if you run a 54t and a 38t on the front with something like a 12-25?

Actually, that was the 11th reference....
