OT: Venus Fly Trap

So my 12yo received a Venus fly trap for a birthday gift yesterday. He and his younger brother spent 2 hours trying to catch a fly this afternoon. They finally caught one and fed it to the plant.

I could hear shouts of amazement from the other room as the plant apparently snapped shut on Vincent Price (the Fly). I have to admit that I was pretty impressed myself.

Is it correct that you don't actually have to feed them an actual fly, but that small bits of meat are just as good? I'd imagine that after a while your kids would tire of chasing flies...

I mentioned the Venus Fly Trap to my pit bull King. He has been hiding under the dining room table ever since and won't come out!! :)

Perhaps this is the answer to TiDesign's problems! Plant this around his yard and feed it mircle grow - perhaps it will eat the witch who grows poison ivy...

Apparently I was wrong. Although they don't come out and say it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_fly_trap gives me the impression that they prey has to be alive. Lots of useful info there if you want to try to keep yours living for a while.
