anyone know of a hard drive system I can use in my home so that two computers can access data without a wired system. I'd like to access data on two computers which are mobile room to room but no wire to plug in like an ethernet -- any suggestions?

If you are using a wireless hub/router, you can get a NAS (Network attached storage) device. Essentially a stand alone HD with a network cable attached. I do not know if a wireless one exists. There are some geekcore limitations with them, i.e. what sort of file system it can run, but unless you are saving files of over 4GB that wont be a major issue.

Seems like you are trying to connect 2 computers wirelessly. When you say the computers are "mobile" what does that mean? Are they laptops? If you are trying to setup a wireless network you will need a wireless router and wireless card or USB device for each of the computers. Laptops today almost always come with built-in wireless so that gets you closer to your goal.
If you have no computer experience with installing hardware then I would suggest the USB wireless devices they are easy to install and configure. The wireless cards are for desktop computers only not laptops.

Here is info on a decent wireless router: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124085

Here is a decent USB wireless adapter: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833150021

Or if you want to install a card, here is a good one:

+1

And make sure you secure your file sharing properties.

Are they Macs or PCs? or both?

following up on this advice ... my guess is your setup is something like internet <--> ISP <--> cable modem / dsl <--> firewall / router / wifi all-in-one <--> laptops via wifi

here is the thing, the great thing about networked devices ... once on the network the placement of the device is irrelevant. wherever you have the firewall / router you have cables and power already. therefore, it should not be a big deal to use more power and put in more cables at that spot.

if i am reading this right ... buy a nas capable hard drive and place it wired to your firewall / router. that will get you the most reliable and fast performance.
