I Want Sachs?

Levi commented today that Cadel Evans committed an error by attacking Levi and ensured 2nd place behing Valverde rather than going for 1st place.
I don't quite understand the logic. Leipheimer and Valverde are both capable winners, so Evans saw opportunity to get rid of one possible winner. Why would that not be good? Now he just has to beat Valverde tomorrow to win.
How would allowing Levi to catch on help Evans' chances? The way I see it is that means he has to hope 2 riders ride badly tomorrow, and the gap to Valverde is no easier than what it is now. Can someone explain Levi? Thanks.
