"*based on healthy men who received annual checkups in Okayama Prefecture"
That could be kinda like me taking a measurement at a bike race or a cross-country meet. I'm one of the heavier looking guys and I have a 30" waist.
I'm not saying Americans aren't way fatter than the Japanese, it's just that the article is misleading in some ways. Still interesting from a yay for government controlling people's way of life angle.

Interesting that the women get a larger allowable waist than the men do. No relationship between waist and height or chest, hips and waist. What will the Sumo wrestlers and post-partem women do (assume that pregnant women must get a pass)?
I'm getting a little Metabo myself lately. Like Ray in the gas thread who avoids the chocolate cookies, my problem is M&M's. Unlike Ray who wisely avoids buying them, my wife sees that I keep eating them and keeps buying them, and then puts them out in a dish on the kitchen counter. So I have to eat them every time I pass by. But it has been 4 days since my last M&M........

I dunno, this Japanese Sumo guy has a pretty big waist, and he's whooping it up on a couple of Americans here. I just thinks his waist is a little bigger...

I don't know, but heaven help you if you violate the national standard for that! :no:
this could only work in a homogeneous culture where people are generally the same size. a 32" waist on a 4-10" man is not the same 32" waistline on a 6-10" man.

No need to overanalyze it imho, its a good measure in any part of the country and not outside of the 'norm' for Japanese to look at a problem this way. What's good for the whole is much more valuable than individual desires/choices over there. And believe me, it don't matter where they measure it, they are way fitter than us by a country mile;
I give them props for at least trying to do something and nip it in the bud.
I just spent my first two days back in the US after 3 years in Japan. All I can say so far is I that am feeling pretty disgusted with our over-the-top culture and gluttony in all of its forms at this point.
