Has anyone tried this? Recommended jerseys? I am mainly concerned with beating the heat but UV protection for the arms sounds good also.

I was looking at this:

and this:

and also this that could be worn with any jersey:

I've been using this Cannondale 'Featherweight' jersey (http://www.cannondale.com/a_a/clothing/08/SS/model-8m106.html#mens_jerseys). Seems OK, I've worn it a couple of times, but we haven't had any hot weather yet.

I like that it's predominantly white and has a full zip. I plan on using it on everything over 3 hours. The one long ride I've done with it, it did what I wanted: kept the sun off and got rid of that grimy bug/sweat/sunburn feel on the arms as the day wore on.

hey that looks pretty good! I'm looking for a lightweight LS jersey also. I like the feel of long sleeves even when it's super hot out.

I've used one from Bouré and it works well. They have a couple of different designs and both men's and women's fit.

Look for their SPF-35 LS models at www.boure.com.

I use several lycra jerseys by different companies (nike, underarmer etc..) I find that they are all cool and block the sun well. I hate sunscreen so all summer I wear LS jerseys.

I like long sleeve seersucker shirts like the sell at Rivendell. Really cool with big buttoned pockets. They don't look "bikey" but that's fine with me.

Another option would be your regular short sleeve jersey with white Assos Arm Protectors. (http://www.assos.com/en/accessories/detail.aspx?article=78&color=) They provide UV protection and some evaporative cooling. Good Luck.

My buddy tried to order it either yesterday or today and they are out of stock. For how long I do not know. He says that he also knows that the De Soto Arm Cooler Sleeves do work.

From Assos....UV arm protectors. They might be more comfortable than a full jersey.

I wear a silk long-sleeved undershirt under my ss jersey. I've never seen a UV rating, but I burn easily and never do when wearing the silk undershirt. I also put sunscreen on underneath before riding as a precaution, but don't re-apply even though I'm out all day. The sleeves are a little looser than a jersey, which makes a nice cooling effect as they move in the wind. If it's super hot, I wet down the sleeves with plain water and that feels really good in the breeze as well.

If I only wore them in the summer, I'd cut the torso off midway, but I sometimes wear them in the winter as well, so I haven't done that.

ll bean tropicwear shirt is another option. It has vents and front pockets.
spf 40 supposedly also. works great except on the most humid days. but then nothing much helps at those times.

David Millar wore a long-sleeved jersey at times during last year's Tour de France You can see it here. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=FEJ6SH65Rww) I think Castelli supplied clothing for his team last year -- that might be a place to start.

I start some meds soon that will make me more susceptible to the negative effects of sun exposure. So, just this morning I was searching the web for UV protective cycling wear. Here's what I found.

People spoke highly of the Boure jerseys, but their website is out of stock in everything smaller than XL until mid-July.

An outfit called Skin Savers offers this jersey:
http://skin-savers.com/Action_Wear/

Another company called CW-X was highlighted in last year's Outside Gear Guide
There sun blocking jersey is here:
http://www.thetriathletestore.com/detail.aspx?ID=738

Solumbra makes a variety of SPF protective clothing:
http://www.sunprecautions.com/product.asp?itemno=1593K08+XS+SOL&CAT=ay&SUBCAT=0au

DeSoto makes these "arm coolers":
http://www.desotosport.com/products/product.asp?Category=accessories&ProdID=AC8

I haven't tried any of these products, so can't attest to their effectiveness.
I plan to order a Boure jersey when they become available and pick up some of the DeSoto arm coolers later this week.

Until the chemo I started this week begins to take hold, my ride time will be limited anyway. I managed 6 miles this morning. Let me tell you, riding with a hemoglobin of less than 10 is an interesting experience. I guess I'll have to appreciate the joys of slow riding for a while. :)

I've used the Hammer LS jersey in hot weather (100 d. F) for both cycling and orienteering. It works great and I felt cooler than in a short sleeve. Perhaps because my arms didn't feel like they were frying in the sun.

I own the Cannondale Featherweight jersey. It's meant to be a UV protection piece. I haven't worn it in real heat but I do like it.

I also own a pair of Defeet armskin lites. Very lightweight, white and meant for sun protection. http://www.defeet.com/prodline.php?line=Armskin%20Lite&type=a

I used the DeSoto arm coolers last fall on a trip to Hawaii where the sun is crazy intense. They worked well--the fabric is not smooth like lycra, so it does feel cool when you're moving. If you're on medication that makes you sensitive to the sun, there are the other obvious do's: ride early (or late), and be careful of your knees, nose and back of your neck, too.

If you were looking for sunscreen recommendations, you might check this out:

although I'd also check with your doctor. Take care.

Thanks for all the replies. Many more choices than I realized. I will be looking at them all the next few days. RAIN is July 12th and supplies might be limited.

Thanks for this reference. I am getting some Vanicream and Kinesys and throwing away everything else.

I was thinking about your situation this a.m., so I threw on the DeSoto arm coolers (first time this year). By the end of the ride, it was 85° with 60% humidity or so--not too terrible but definitely lightweight ss jersey weather. The arm coolers were comfortable. Not as great when slogging up a hill at 10 mph in broad sun, but at least I didn't feel my forearms cooking. And there's definitely a cooling effect above 15 mph or so. Worth a try, IMO.

SteveCool that you can still ride - slow is better than not at all - hang in there and good luck with the chemo.

What silk long-sleeved undershirt do you recommend?

I got my long-sleeved silk undershirts from REI.

By the way, now I'm trying something different. My husband really loves Under Armor Heat Gear compression undershirts. I got a few at Marshall's for about $10 each. I found out that the compression really helps my upper back problem! Now I'm practically addicted to the compression. I got a long-sleeved UA Heat Gear undershirt to cover my arms, but it's not as comfortable. The sleeves are a bit long and really tight. I'm thinking of cutting a few inches off the ends of the sleeves, but I don't know if that would destroy/unravel them. Any ideas? In the meantime, I'm thinking of getting something like the DeSoto Arm Coolers to wear with my compression tanks. I still have a little time to experiment before our week-long bike tour in late September.

What silk long-sleeved undershirt do you recommend?I don't like being a naysayer and I have only owned one silk undershirt, but it is soaking wet after hot rides; i.e., doesn't breathe and/or transfer mositure well. A $$$ hot weather Craft baselayer is better but I remain MUCH cooler with a ss jersey alone. However I am really slow so my experience may not apply to faster riders.

Since my heat-intolerant old body collapses as the temp approaches a mere 80deg I have been on a prolonged quest for the coolest summer garments and will definitely try one or more of the arm coolers or ls jerseys recommended in this thread. Thanks all.

I live in Phoenix, so protection from the sun is something that's pretty important to me, too. I have been using the DeSoto Arm Coolers on hot days for a year or so after seeing recommendations on Slowtwitch. To my surprise, they seem to work really well. They block the sun well enough that I don't feel like my arms are roasting, and the textured fabric definitely gives some cooling effect. Sometimes I don't feel like wearing them at the beginning of a ride, but when I put them on partway into a hot and sunny ride, I'm always glad I did.

Anyway, I definitely recommend giving them a try. Plus, DeSoto has really good customer service and a money-back guarantee on their clothing, which is hard to beat.

+1.

It can get a little bit warm but does prevent arms from feeling like they are being fried in the sun.
