View Full Version : What do you think of this toptube pad?

My experience with the fixed gear toptube pad thing is minimal. I've actually only ever seen a couple of photos of the things and never a 'real' one.

One of my friends though, had me build a bike for him and it came time over this past few days for him to do an upgrade, off the top of his head, he asked me to make him a frame pad (and I touched his shoulder and "Bam!! You're a frame pad").

Given that I know nothing of the things (and the fact that I know my friends to be particularly fickle when it comes to stuff like this), along with my fear of water+dirt getting under it and destroying the steel frames finish, I spent 14 hours designing and fabricating this. Whaddya all think?

I assume the purpose of those is to protect the man parts?
If so, doesn't seem like that's going to pad much...maybe instead of raising his voice three octives in an unfortunate accident, it will only be 2 and 11/12ths...

Scrooge,

I believe that the purpose of these things is to protect the toptube from being gnashed up y your honking tough, bigtime, metal lock. That said, I'm only one step farther along the path than you are, so.....- I guess that I'd much rather hit this (in a uncontrolled moment) than the bare tube, if I had the choice

I assumed they were for protecting the top tube from the bars since there were no cables to limit travel.

Since you don't have drop bars do you need a pad?

From my best interpretation of BikesnobNYC's rambling disses, these are all about the locks. Never considered the fixie 'free-headset' plight until just now.

Do you live in NYC? Do you lock up your bike? If so, anything that uglifies it is a good thing. :D

Just saw this bike on another thread and was suprised to see gears (I'm not very observant so didn't see them here first)...I thought this was a fixie thing...

I do live in NYC but don't have any bikes I consider disposable, so never lock 'em up (I'll post a picture I shot a couple of days ago to illustrate the point. People can be incredibly mean-hearted in this city). As for the fixie thing: Yep. Toptube pads are a fixie 'thing' but they originated as a messenger thing and not all messengers ride fixed. Obviously, this bike is multi-speed equipt.

86th btwn Lex + Third. I guess that the bike (a titanium Lemond I believe, or what's left of it) was in the way of the stores 'trash spot', in the tree's planter maybe?

The type of top tube protector you are thinking of is quite a bit different...smaller and usually made out of metal with some sort of rubber between the protector and the top tube. Like this:

What the OP shows will only protect from simple scratches. It won't stop a dent from happening.
