As someone going through the process of "the purge" I can't even fathom this:

http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=tree&goto=3763171&rid=0

There's well over $500,000 there...

There's something mildly disturbing about all those second hands bleating the time away.

And I pity the poor schmuck who agrees to "wanna buy a watch"....

Bingo. That did it for me for the night. Time for me to go to sleep. It is really late....anyone have a watch to tell me what time it is????

You would think that as obsessive as that guy must be, that all of the watches would be the same time.

Whatever, the guy doesn't even have a swatch!

***?!?!

Does this guy have a job to go to, or does he just sit around all the time posting messages and photographing his watches? That must have taken him a whole day just to do the picture! And are these expensive watches?

I think they should be set at 1/4 increments of every time zone and epoxied to completely cover the body work of a black AMC Pacer....

Too many for a pacer it would have to be an AMC Matador.

That guy is a true collector! I think of Jack more as a connoisseur than collector and I'm glad he is. His reports aside from being entertaining have probably saved me some $$ over the years.

Wow.

To answer a question above, some of those are fairly valuable (in the few thousand dollar range) but most are not particularly so.

And I like his Engrish closing line: "I am all pooped up."

I had the exact same thought. Imagine somehow getting all those watches in synch. You'd walk into the storage room and there would be a tremendous tic-tic-tic-tic. Scary.

From the look of his fat paw wrapped around that iron he should trade some of them for a good bike and _thin himself up a bit_.

Just sayin'

My apologies to Jack if he though I was comparing him to this guy, I was simply trying to come up with a title that would garner attention.

This thread was about me in the process of 'purging' myself of a bunch of stuff I don't really need and the accompanying amazement that someone could have 1/2aMill tied up in watches, with so many that he doesn't even know what he's got anymore. Regarding Brunk, I think Mike said it best: Jack is a connoisseur not a collector.

I truly hope I did not offend you Jack...

Very very OT, but the other day I read a Catherine Coulter mystery (not very good) set in Maine, and 2 John Connolly books (a pretty good imho Irish writer who lives in Dublin, but the books are set in Maine).

They all sort of follow the S. King "horror" genre.

I have never been there: Why is Maine seemingly the setting for so many books of this kind?

Back OT: I am almost imagining a small-town coastal Maine horror novel comprised of a crazy 10,000+ Seiko watch collector from old Bar Harbor; a deranged Acadian uncle and his contraband-dealing post-punk stepson;; an abandoned light house at the end of a kudzu-infested decaying granite jetty; a rusted Plymouth Valiant station wagon up on blocks like some George Segal sculpture; and an old and bitter love quadrangle involving some of the founders of Aegis bikes. But somehow the plot keeps getting side-tracked by a bunch of Grant Petersen Rivendellish strident invectives about 150mm Nitto stems; Rapha-branded ploypropolene hairshirts; and continuous insults against those A. Homer Hilsen rip-off Columbus kit carbon frames used in PBP....

That looks great. I'm really wanting a SKX007J but I'm trying to make myself have some self-discipline and wait until I sell my frame.

I actually like the older divers like yours better than the new ones, but can't seem to score a good quality one for less than a new 007 on eBay. May I ask where you obtained yours? Seems to be in great shape for it's age.

I've been enjoying learning about these amazing little machines for but a very short while now, but here:

http://www.network54.com/Forum/170229/

and here:

http://www.mwrforum.net/forums/index.php

are great places to start, I got mine there. The 6306 is much rarer than a 6309 (but basically the same watch) because their production was very short, and it was a Japan-only model that used a 21J hackable movement (compared to the 17J non-hacking movements in the 6309). The 6309 is a helluva tough watch, are fairly common, is priced reasonably similar to the SKX007 (my 6306 was quite a bit more)--I'd get one of those if you like the older style. Mine was worked over by Jack at IWW; there are plenty of good makers out there who can make an old one look, and run, as good (or better) than new so don't worry about the age bro...

I dunno, if I was a regular on that forum, I would be kind of turned off by how haphazzardly all those pieces are strewn about in his boxes, even if they are the 'cheap' ones. I mean come on; show a little respect.

And speaking of prices, those two rows of vintage grand seikos alone have to be worth well over 30 grand. I've been casually observing the prices of them over here on auctions and pawn shops.

with 500+ watches, if the average price is $100, that puts the number at a 1/2. IDK, but unless the majority of the Seikos are close to worthless ... add together the swiss / german collection + special seikos and the average watch value could be quite a bit higher than $100. with a 500 multiplier, the value could get serious rapidly.

at what point does one cross over from connoisseur to collector?

no way the average value is $100 there. Sure, they're only worth what someone will pay for them, but I'd bet a months paycheck he has more than 300K sunk into that collection... er, I mean, jumble.
