That may have been the greatest message board flame I have ever witnessed.

I missed the whole swoop thing. I write about him often, as much as I can; I try to generate bits and pieces of his biography:

Cowgirl is a penguin. Penguin gone bad, but still a penguin. There's good penguins and bad ones. In some ways, Swoop reminded me of Bones, the Dr. from Star Trek.

Dear Swoop,

I know you're out there, thrust into a TRON-like maze of binary-code filled with luminescent skin suits, emotional sailing vessels which have fractured masts and broken oars; alas my seatpost binder bolt is stripped, I'm reduced to climbing on the flats and I'm struggling on my feet, lost. Still, I must move forward, electronically, energy must move or cease. The electricity you left behind remains, it merely changes form and we are reminded during a summer storm our largest lightning strike is but a rubber band snap in the space beyond our clouds; there are storms, powers and colors deep beyond our curious scope. So I propel forward, advance, I feel the breeze, this wind is a ballad, I hear your voice calling and I sing your song.

how many train wrecks do we need to see
before we lose touch of
without this was low
let's bad getting worse so

where did all the good people go,
i've been changing channels
i don't see them
on the tv shows
where did all the good people go,
we got heaps and heaps of what we saw

they got this and that
with a rattle of tat
test down, 1 2
man what you gonna do
bad news, missed use
got too much to lose
gimme some truth
now whose side are we on
whatever you say, turn on the boobtube
i'm in the mood to obey
so leave me astray, and by the way now

where did all the good people go,
i've been changing channels i don't see them
on the tv shows
where did all the good people go,
we got heaps and heaps of what we saw

sitting around feeling far away
so far away but i can feel the debris
can you feel it ?
you interrupt me from a friendly conversation
to tell me how great it's all gonna be
you might notice some hesitation
it's important to you it's not important to me
but way down by the edge or your reason
well it's forgetting the show
and all i really wanna know is

where did all the good people go,
i've been changing channels
i don't see them on the tv shows
where did all the good people go,

they got this and that

Whoever left, whoever stayed, whoever took the time to say goodbye, whoever simply left, they did so and it's their deal; we don't know the facts, maybe they weren't allowed to say goodbye. My salt shaker is mostly full, I won't throw any at cats who aren't here (I don't use much salt, margaritas are shaken, on the rocks, no salt thank you). I was banned from a needlepoint forum, it was ugly and they didn't let me take my string with me. So, David Bowie sums it up best (and I know Fixed will enjoy the beat, Girlie will enjoy the art) and what's pretty cool is that we...we're on Mars right now  :

Yes - I am a bit bitter over that.period.
As William S. Burroughs would say "Wouldn't you."

I built an outdoor firepit over the weekend for some friends. The stones were drapped in poison ivy, I have two little dots of Cylon ivy on my right forearm and I'm bitter about that. I never get scratch-related stuff and I'm scratching it. I've used straight up tea tree oil and I'm going to use gasoline next.

I'm bitter about poison ivy, the fact that gas will be $5.00 a gallon, hopeful the Celtics play the Lakers in the finals, bummed about the Yankees, but I don't think latitude or longitude play a role in how boys/girls play...playing with those boys.

Don't be bitter.
Be better.

Here, nothing Kenny Loggins can't spell out 'Playin' with the Boys':

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT59FXkS93Q

I'd say it was the right time
To walk away
When dreaming takes you nowhere
It's time to play
Bodies working overtime
Your money don't matter
Time keeps ticking
Someone's on my mind

I'm moving in slow motion
Feels so good
It's a strange anticipation
Knock, knock, knocking on wood
Bodies working overtime
It's Man against man
All that ever matters
Is baby who's ahead in the game
Funny but it's always the same

Playing, playing with the boys
Staying, playing with the boys
After chasing sunsets
One of life's simple joys
Is playing with the boys

She said it was the wrong thing
For me to do
I said it's just a boys' game
That Girls play too
My heart is working overtime
In this kind of game
People get hurt
I'm thinkin that the people is me
If you want to find me, I'll be

Playing, playing with the boys
Staying, playing with the boys
After chasing sunsets
One of life's simple joys
...is the boys

I don't want to be the moth around your fire
...with the boys
I don't want to be obsessed by my desire
Your shining, Your smiling
I've seen enough
...with the boys
I'm staying here
You play too rough

Playing, playing with the boys
I'll be staying, playing with the boys
After chasing sunsets
One of life's simple joys
Is playing with the boys
Playing with the boys
Playing
Playing
Playing
Playing

I can't help but feel like God descended from above, said a few things to offend some people, then returned to his heavens. It has become far less informed a place around here after the NE's left. And we don't even have any Zen either. It just sits as a sticky to remind us all of what could have been, a road not taken perhaps. I will stop waxing.

I partly agree.....no knocking the know of the people that left...their entertainment and knowledge is undeniable. Though at the same time let's not deny some of them had a bit of self-righteousness - this often equaled the entertainment.
For me it was the boys clubiness of it that killed it. Not saying I wasn't entertained and enjoyed DarrenCT and some of the other stuff though the exodus and the "boy" element of it doesn't sit well with me.
Mainly I'm just pissed about the lack of entertainment or people to rival;) I'd be bored in their club house as well:) I miss the diversity of them though the self implied importance I can't say that I miss...even if they are partly correct in their importance - it's simply obnoxious to 'HAVE' to point it out:) So at the end of the day any loss is a loss and of course they are missed.

^ I'm lost! :D

Behind every great man there is a lady (or a great dog). This is true. And I will only say nice things about those who swam from the island in the middle of the night. I have experience in this when I was banned from that needlepoint forum, they thought I had a big ego regarding Irish Knit Wool Sweaters so they pushed me off the board. Funny thing though, the board members/ownership pushed me off the board...with their egos. I lurk and I see their Irish Knit Wool Sweaters and I see where the members STILL refer to their pattern of Irish Knit Wool Sweaters based on their "clan"; duh people, in Ireland there are no 'clans', clans are for the Scots, in Ireland they have 'Septs' and no, there are no distinct patterns of wool to distinguish any Sept.

I didn't get to know stevep well enough. I wanted to go to his house with a bag of fresh, fusilli pasta, meatballs and beer...watch a Yankees/Sox game in high def in his living room, then cap it off with some needlepoint where I would make him a fall/winter riding sweater if he could trade me some cycling schwag.

I wanted to stop in CT and do the same with DarrenCT and heck, it'd be cheaper cause we wouldn't eat pasta, that would only take up room in our bellies where beer belongs. Grant, Green, Dirtdigger88 and all of you, Aran Sweaters are the best, they are made just west of my home, in Galway Bay, near Mayo and Galway on three Aran islands where the salmon is pink, the beer is brown and the wool is warm.

True story...I swear!
Whenever I get poison ivy I end up in the ER. Twice now......I'm allergic to it.

Not everyones body responds the same. And some climates promote it's growth.

I use Fell's Naptha soap with a scrub brush, topped off with Clorox. Works every time. A dip in the swimming pool (chlorine) works too, but takes longer.

This reminds me of people who spend hours talking about or aping their favorite TV show and complain about the actors, the story lines, or the lack of entertainment yet still watch it every time it's on rerun or no, then complain when the network axes it.

You miss these people? You liked them well enough that you contacted them elsewhere and you have some sort of contact for them? Right? Drop them a note, say hi.

Otherwise BE the change you want to see.

Poison ivy: When I get it, it goes systemic and is very bad. Mix that with doing trail work in Michigan and...yeah...this is how I avoid the aftermath:

If you've been in contact with it, or think you may have had contact, douse yourself and your clothing with straight vinegar. (Yes. I used to carry a jug in the car when doing trail work. If you have a bad reaction to it, why wouldn't you?) Rinse yourself and your clothes off as much as possible with the vinegar, you can follow with cold water if you need to rinse off.
When you get home, take a cold shower with straight dish washing soap that DOES take the oil out of everything it touches. Fell's Naptha works too.

Dump clothes in the washer immediately and wash in cold with lots of soap.

Follow up vinegar and cold shower treatment with a coating of pure lavender oil.

Vinegar: Strips oil
Fell's Naptha: Strips oil
Lavender oil: dries and soothes

Ivy block does a decent job for most people. Not me...but that's just how it goes.

I dunno. The thing i remember was that those who left may have had some reasons, but they knew and loved bikes and bikestuff..it was what they do. They gave what they knew for free and didn't ask for anything in return. Hope they are all doing fine and that they all come back.

I think Your_Friend was the beginning of the end.

I'm just happy that I have a great-riding Serotta waiting for me, whenever I can get home.

There were some magical days here, but overall it just devolved into stupidity and in-jokes. I grew out of cliques in 8th grade.

To quote former Boston Celtics coach Rick Pitino as fans continued to compare his struggling 2000 team to the legendary Celtic championship teams:

"Larry Bird is not walking through that door, fans. Kevin McHale is not walking through that door, and Robert Parish is not walking through that door. And if you expect them to walk through that door, they're going to be gray and old. What we are is young, exciting, hard-working, and we're going to improve. People don't realize that, and as soon as they realize those three guys are not coming through that door, the better this town will be for all of us because there are young guys in that (locker) room playing their asses off. I wish we had $90 million under the salary cap. I wish we could buy the world. We can't; the only thing we can do is work hard, and all the negativity that's in this town sucks. I've been around when Jim Rice was booed. I've been around when (Carl) Yastrzemski was booed. And it stinks. It makes the greatest town, greatest city in the world, lousy. The only thing that will turn this around is being upbeat and positive like we are in that locker room... and if you think I'm going to succumb to negativity, you're wrong."

The more it changes, the more it stays the same.

And I thought it was working quite nicely, but then somebody sat up on a big steep downhill and whacked the headtube from the side. Sheesh!

I've learned a lot from this forum, mainly due to reading the posts of the whole rather than direct correspondence with anyone in particular. But I never had a reason to take issue with anyone in particular, and I ignored the stuff that wasn't worth consuming.

When I say 'it worked', I mean that those in the 'know' were willing to distill knowledge to the 'newbies' whilst making slight fun of the 'newbies' and whilst making non-sequitur remarks that would leave those in the 'know' with a good chuckle and that would leave the 'newbies' with a sense of being a troglodyte rather than an equal.

But it seemed to work. I was willing to put up with the nonsense because of the goodness that could be distilled out. Others weren't as willing to put up with the nonsense.

Here's my $.02 for the night: The forum was best when it was equal parts cyclist and rider. An all cyclists forum? Not as good. An all riders forum? Not as good.

An all cyclists forum would be like a NAHBS where only the builders show up. An all riders forum would be like a NAHBS where only posers like me show up. ;) Neither, imho, have staying power.

Oh, and I ride a Serotta that I bought new so my opinion is the one that counts! :p

M.Sommers

I think Your_Friend was the beginning of the end.

We mock the exclusivity of those departed, then we create it. I do not get it.

We want togetherness, brotherhood of cyclists, then we post how Your_Friend! (please don't forget the exclamation point) is a _______ (insert mean spirited adjective).

Your moniker refers to a 'geek' and that is cool, being geeky is always in style (I'm a recovering preppy Star Wars/Trek geek) but maybe, perhaps, not all of us are geeks who know what 6x10 to the 23rd power means. Maybe some were the life of the party, some were the stoner at the party, some were the organizer, some were the jock, some were the bartender, some were Goth (whom we know so little about) some were doing horrific karaoke at the party and some stood outside or even sat at home watching Dana Scully on 'X-Files' as they were afraid to go to the party. It takes all kinds. Hopefully there's room at the party for Your_Friend! and Your_Friend!'s friends. Divisiveness does not win, even on EPO.

Paul Sherman, Phil Legget, Bobke. Three completely different beings, bam! Who knows, Your_Friend!_could be Bobke! You teach togetherness, brotherhood, sisterhood or Your_Friendhood! by displaying it.

I am in love with Your_Friend! Dunno if Your_Friend! is a woman, man, green alien or a very_intelligent Golden Labrador Retriever from your avatar, but shouldn't we appreciate and value the messages within Your_Friend!'s posts (or browse over them if you so choose)?

PS. Dude, you used the word 'I' five times in your post. This says so much, fyI.

You listening Ben?
And now that is all I have to say about that...........period.

Eh. A tribe lived in a valley. The chief orated. The tribe bickered. One day some of the tribe went to live in another valley. The ones left behind said well, they sucked always telling us how we didn't know how to hunt. Life went on. Both tribes did fine. It's an old story.

But it did sort of take care of that inbreeding problem for a while.
