View Full Version : Chain Tensioners: Push or Pull?

So I'm curious....

I see that some chain tensioners have the ability to either push the chain up, or push it down to take up the slack. For example the Surly Singlator comes with two springs to set it up either way. Obviously pushing up gives you more chain wrap around the rear cog, yet of the bikes I've seen with tensioners, almost all have been pushing down.

What's the story here?

+1--keeps the chain from jumping off. Better solution--buy an Eno rear hub.

ja, the bros say avoid tensioners. but i'd agree, wrap is good.

I tried to run in in the push down position, chain jumped off, changed to push up, no more chain jump issue.

Push up is better, but sometimes the chain will foul the chainstay in this mode.

OH BTW, tensioners suck :fight:
