It was a perfect day for some racing so I thought I'd go down and watch some local racing. 1K course, four corners. Pro, 1, 2 and 3's lined up.
What a snoozer to watch! 39 lap fitness check and a 200 meter sprint.
No wonder more "fans" don't show up to watch. Just family and friends and a few bored dogs.....
Isn't Criterium racing in theroy spectator friendly? I always remember great racing with attacks everywhere back at North Boulder Park. Has this sit in and wait style become the norm?
Next time I'll just use the time to go for a ride instead

I know that criterium races can be boring, but went to bikejam yesterday in Baltimore. The weather was beautiful and it was criterium races all day long in Patterson Park. The men's pro race was 40 miles and David Veilleux from Kelly Benefits won. The race sponsor (sp??) (Kely Benefits) had to be happy. It was a 4 man breakaway for about the last 10 laps. The course wasn't that challenging...1-mile loop through the park...but those guys were flying. They also had bands playing and a guy doing bike tricks. Took my wife and daughter and it was fun. Went for a ride earlier, and all in all it was a good day.

Over the last few years I've seen about a dozen crits in St Louis and what you describe is the rule, rather than the exception. Every now and then you get a breakaway, but as I recall, most end in a huge sprint. One memorable exception is described here (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?p=384069)

Crits are about as exciting as the fans/community want or let them be...
Most are in boring office parks with bored spectators. Superweek has some great crits and the fans are into it. Block parties with screaming fans and lots of beer and brats! I crashed out in Sheboygan once and got more than a few beers from spectators to ease my pain.
I did Cat's hill a few weeks ago and it could have been better, I was kinda surprised of the lack of any sort of block party given the perfect little neighborhoods it rolls through.

The Colavita women's team kicks a$$ (I know this 'cause they kicked mine). In the picture Richard's mouth is open - nothing good can come from that.

Shontell looks a whole lot taller in that picture than I remember her being when I met her while visiting Austin in January.
Either that, or Frieze is shrinking with age.
TiD, she could kick just about anyone's a$$ I know.

i am more than happy if i can "just sit in" when i am thrown in with the 1/2's

She is still 5'3" with lifts Bruce, don't worry. They kicked again today with a
win in Somerville. (The Colavita men weren't too shabby either, going 1,2)
And funny you all mention the announcer. Shontell gets a little nervous speaking in public, and he was a little in your face. She said she kept trying to back away, almost falling off the step.

Alexis,
You obviously have never met Richard in person.
He is part announcer, part educator, part ringmaster, and 100% entertainer.
In your face is just part of his repertoire.
But he is a lot of fun and good for events and spectators.
