View Full Version : Riding in Rain ..... Water in BB

About 8 miles into my 18 mile loop yesterday, the weather looked
rather ominous, so I turned around. About a minute later, it began to
rain. Not too heavy but more then a drizzle.

Last evening, I read a post (can't locate it now) about water in the BB.
I believe BBD added his distilled wisdom.

I figured .... Heck .... I only did seven miles. I could not possibly have
water in the BB. But as a safety precaution, I remove the screw which
secures the plastic cable guide underneath the BB Shell. A few ounces of
water poured out. I was astonished !!!!!!!

I then removed the seat post and let everything dry overnight.

IF you ride in the rain at all .... drain your BB. If you lack a drain plug,
hang the bike upside down.

I am still astonished at the water that accumulated with just a few miles
in the rain. ;)

Meh.
I'm looking for an excuse to buy a new bike sometime in the next ten (twenty?) years.

I've got a Legend Ti .... But I am still paranoid ...

Can't the water play havoc with the bearings in the BB?

Water can just run up the down tube and/or chainstays and you'll never know it. Just remove the cable guide screw under the BB and your seat post and it will dry out fine.

Water can accumulate in the tubes just from temperature differentials if the system is "closed". Condensation can occur on the inside of the tubes, not unlike how water gets into your gas tank.

I agree.

If there is no hole in the BB remove the screw and let it drain and air out. It will drain best with the bike sitting on it's wheels and most of the tubes angle down to the BB.

BTW, not all bikes drain to the seat tube, downtube, or chainstays. On one of my frames the BBKT is sealed off except for cable guide hole.

I was caught in a torrential downpour Tuesday night. When I got home I was shocked to find not a drop of water come out of my C50. My Legend would always collect water.

starts making all kinds of Gene Krupa like sounds after I even get near water. Replaced it this week after annoying everyone in the pack during last week's race.

Thanks Professor Kirk. That's exactly what I did and will do in the future.
Much appreciate your distilled wisdom. ;)

here's a question: how do you know all the water was from that one ride ?

oh, and I have heard that you could put a couple a frn's down your seat tube to soak up the water; they inflate quite well and will soak it up !!!

I've heard the same thing about using and FRN to boot a tire...just slide it into place and the inflation of the tire will be no problem!

This was my first ride in the rain this reason ....
Bike was bone dry over the winter.

I primarily use frns to inflate my tires when I am out riding and get a flat.
They inflate anything.

Frns left in the BB will dilute the grease in the bearings.

Hey Ahneida...It was me that started a couple threads about it last week. I was surprised too. Glad to see that you got some good responses, as did I. I'm not going to drill any holes, but I'll be unscrewing that bb screw more often - as my neglect cost me a bottom bracket.

Keep 'er on two wheels!

Brian ....

Thanks a million for the Post .....

Hey .... just removing the bottom screw (least on a Serotta) works
flawlessly ...

Again ... this is why I love this place .... all sorts of tidbits of priceless
information. ;)
