Hi,

I have a few frames I'm getting repainted, another I'm trying to sell (Davidson (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=45548)) and I'm looking for two types of bike shipping items:

(1) The plastic inserts that go between the rear dropouts and fork dropouts

(2) The rubber "donuts" for temporarily attaching a fork to a frame (they act like a headset in a way)

Does anyone know a source for these things?

Thanks,

Dave, who used up the ones he had when he sent a frame to JB for a sweet paint job

Do you have an LBS you frequent?

They usually have plenty of those spacers from their bike shipments and will probably just give them to you.

Not sure about the rubber donuts you're talking about.

+1 on the LBS for the spacers.

As for the rubber bits, you can go to your local hardward store and buy some O-rings, or simpler still, take a fat elastic band and figure 8 it around the steer tube, one loop on the bottom side before inserting the steer tube into the frame, and then once or twice around the top.

You could also just bubble wrap the fork and tape or zip tie it to the down tube.

See you are in NY, if you are close to ParkRidge NJ (CYCLESPORT) give Mike or Dean a call. Tell them that Pete Mckeon said they would have these. (they come with the frames shipped to them). Another option is to get the place doing your painting to add some when they ship your frame back.

Get a threaded steel bar longer than the drop out lenght (local harware). Get 4 nuts for each bar (front and rear). 2 nuts inside the drop-out ...2 nuts outside the dropout. Secure the lot. Drop outs wont budge.
Bobs your uncle!
Pack the fork in a seperate box inside the main box.

I would recommend not having the fork inserted in the headtube when shipping a bike. When I got my Terraplane from Dave Kirk it was packed to perfection. He made an internal perimeter of cardboard to go around the frame so that the box could not be crushed and the separately wrapped fork had its own segregated area in the box. Packing the fork separately, you won't need the rubber fake headset. I think those are more useful for displaying a frame and fork in a bikeshop. A real work of art and I used the same method when I sent my CSI to Joe Bell.

Instead of those plastic things to go in the dropouts, you can also use some big blocks of styrofoam. In my town we have to bring our cardboard to the recycling center, so I'm always able to find some there (even though that stuff isn't supposed to be left at the recycling center :) ).

LBS for the plastic spacer items, or www.biketoolsetc.com if you prefer.

Second the recommendation for removing the fork from the frame.

Frank sells lots of frames - he has a photo documentation of how he packs his frames. Search the forum -

Don't forget to add blocks of foam or PVC pipe cut and hot glued to the box on the inside to prevent crushing...that was one of the better ideas I gleaned from packing searches....

The very best thing one can do to prevent crushing of a bike box is to internally reinforce it as Dekonick says. No matter how well a bike is boxed and padded, if other objects are placed on top of a laid down bike box, and they will be, it will be crushed to some extent.

If you go to carpet stores or fabric stores they have the cardboard tubes that the aforementioned come on. It is a simple matter to cut these tube to the correct length and hot glue two of them in the middle of the box about 10 inches apart. I do that to the bikes/frames I've shipped all over the country by many different carriers and I've not had any damage issues.
