Feel sad for the penguin. Anyway, saw a movie with a similar story about a baby camel where the mother would have nothing to do with it (was a serious movie). Anyway, they brought in a girl who treated the mother camel nicely and sang to her...next thing you know baby and mother were getting along fine. Maybe your friend should offer to step in and help.
