View Full Version : Where do you weigh in

Was just thinking that when i was racing MTB's years ago i weighed 185 ( 6ft1). I switched over to road racing and it seems I have lost 10 pounds with every Cat up I have made. I feel pretty good at 155 and the watts haven't fallen off . I am sure there is a point where you can lose to much weight and get deminishing returns, but my weight seems to have settled in . It is funny to hear people ( at work, non cyclists) telling me i am to skinny and need to eat. So where do you weigh in ? Have you crossed that point where you lost to much weight and loss power?

I'm 5'11 and weigh 163. I weighed about 154 as a sophmore in HS and 168 as a senior. I've gotten down to about 159 a few times over the last few years. Each time I witnessed a clear drop-off in power followed by sickness.

Can't answer your question but I'm thinner and healthier than ever since adopting a predominately fruit and leafy greens diet. Once or twice a week I'll eat anything--but not much of it. Beer as usual.

5'11" and 152#. That's lighter than I've been most of my adult life. I'm 41. I used to weigh 165 in "cycling shape" and spent a LOT of time in the 170's.

Of course all the "regular" folks think I'm too skinny and ask if I've been sick. They'll get used to it, because I like the look and the improved power/weight ratio, as well as the reduced risk of diseases of lifestyle.

My weight has stabilized since the pretty quick slim down, and I expect a few pounds to come back as my legs develop. I don't expect my power to suffer ever--I haven't reached a plateau yet.

I am not a 'typical' cyclist shape, 5'9" and about 185lbs at age 45. As a sophomore in high school, swimming close to 7 miles per day and weight training three days a week, I was the same height and 180 lbs.

A few years back I got down to about 175lbs - a draconian low-fat diet and riding close to 250 miles per week. I felt like crap until I broke 180 again.

I'm 5' 11" and I am 175. I find it a lot easier to be 180 than 170. I cannot get below 170 and can barely stay there very long.

6'1 195lbs. I hit 215 lbs 5 years ago and that was a bit much. When I was 25 I played rugby at 185 lbs. so anything under 200 is probably pretty good at 65 years old. :)

5-11 and am stable at about 175. I rowed for many years as a lightweight which meant weighing in under 160 lbs. That's about as skinny as is healthy for me when rowing, but I could probably go lighter riding as there is less upper body muscle mass. The last time I was below 160 was for 1997 when I won at Nationals. I feel great at about 165 and am working towards that for this summer. Rowing seems to get the weight off pretty fast if I am careful with the chow and the booze.

I'm 5'2" (even though on my driver's license it says 5'3" because I lied about my height) and I range from 106 to 117 lbs. As a runner I did better at 106...but I find for cycling 115lbs works better. The funny thing is that I wear the same size clothes regardless. I've gained weight since I started cycling. I ride 200-400 miles a week. Each time I get below 110lbs I don't have energy for long (4+)rides or hard group rides. I never understood it. But I always want to lose a few---even if it means I am slow.

I'm not sure how I would notice a loss in power given the miniscule amount I produce. I'm 51 and 5-11 and try not to look too often at my weight. My standard is pants size. If I can fit into 32's without tightness or overhang, then I feel like I'm ok. It does stink to have a gut though...

beer as usual for wademo=1 or 2 short (14.9oz) pints of Guinness most days, and 3-6 on race/hard ride day or some other weekendly event. ;)

The one pair of pants I can wear beltless now, I was trying to give away last year for being too small. I can't remember what I weighed in high school but estimate it to be mid 140's. I was 160+ well before I finished college.

I was 6-5, 165 as a senior in high school.

Seven back surgeries later I'm only 6-4 1/4. I also weigh 180. I was at a high of 210 when I came out of four months in a body cast in '02.

I find that I fluxuate between about 177 and 185 and for the life of me can't figure out the whys are wherefores. I ride for six or seven straight days and gain weight. Don't ride and I lose. And vice versa.

I think He has a sense of humor sometimes.

5'10 160 these days.
That's down from the mid 170's last year. Sure does make climbing easier. I guess that really means my 12 year old Csi became a 6 pound wonder bike!

Peak fitness was 140-ish a number of years ago. Never felt like I lost power because I was too skinny - probably because I didn't have any power to begin with.
Scary skinny racing in HS and college at 125 - all knees and elbows.

Cheers!

6'1", 170... I'm only 30 though.

I was around this weight when I finished high school.. maybe 175-180?

I was 205 when I finished college.. yay BEER.

It's pretty rare for me to go much below 170... but I've gotten down to 165 and I'm definitely faster at 165 then 170.. every pound between 165-175 feels like it makes a huge difference climbing.

Eliminating beer is a huge way to trim down... probably the same thing with all the red wine talk on here.. even if you're not sucking down tons of them they all screw with your appetite & make you eat a little more..

Last time I bought beer at the store was for the super bowl, I bought a 12-pack, no one ended up wanting beer, and I still haven't finished that 12-pack. I've maybe had 10 drinks all year including getting one at a restaurant, etc.. as soon as I eliminate most alcohol the fat just dissappears generally.

It's a self perpetuating cycle too.. the lower your % bodyfat gets the less alcohol you need to get a buzz.. so once you lose it you're content with a single drink once in a while. If I hit 10% or less I really do not want a 2nd drink ever.

Im the same way. I am 6'3" 200 pounds. I will probably be around 195 once summer gets going.

ANyways, I workout at least 10 hours a week and can easily hit 20 hours depending on how long my long ride goes. I dont just bike, I jump rope, lift weights (and I really lift weights, I squat over 200 and bench about the same) do tons of abs, pull ups and push ups as well as swim and run.

I just did my physical today and my BMI has gone up to 14%. The last two summers I got myself down to about 175 (6-7% BMI), but I had to go pretty crazy on the diet. Fruits and lettuce for lunch and a single can of tuna fish,a single peice of chicken breast, or turnkey lunch meats for dinner for months. However, by the time Thanksgiving rolls around, I am always back up to 195-200.

No matter what I do, I will come back to 200 pounds. Now that I am getting married, gearing up for nightschool, I have to actually eat a civilized dinner and cant train for 3-4 hours after work. I guess I just have to settle for 200 pounds.

It sucks because I know what it was like at 175, and I was much faster.

But oh well, thats life i guess.

6.2, 164 this year and much faster. last year was 173-175lb. I had the no more baby making surgery and dropped weight in a month.
College playing soccer was 160lb.

I too seem to gain a little weight after a hard weekend, but a day or two after it is gone again. Anyone no why this happens?

5'10", 160lbs. The 160 is my lowest weight in maybe 10 years. I have been hovering between 165 and 175 over the last few years (more in winter, less in summer). I decided this year to see what 160lb would look like. Feels great, and am riding as well as ever, but even now feels like the pot belly and love handles are still there a bit. Am thinking about seeing what 155lb looks l like, for no particular reason other than I'm just curious.

wade, could you tell me what a day's normal menu is for you? much appreciated, thanks!

Keeping it short to avoid boring the peloton: I have a green smoothie in the morning-just whatever fruit I have handy with some romaine or spinach-as much as I want. Usually two full beer glasses.

Lunch: whole fruit, two or three oranges or apples and about three bananas. No limit. Greens if handy.

Supper: Tortilla chips and salsa with a heaping helping of greenage and half an avocado (high fat)--three or four days per week. Other days I eat baked fish, fried fish, Mexican, or Mom's cooking.

It's nigh impossible to eat too much fruit and greens. I only watch portions when eating the high-fat stuff. And sometimes I don't do that-Mexican.

Beer, Tequila, and 'shine in moderation!

80/10/10 Diet and The China Study are two great books about ultimate performance and health nutrition. And I've read A LOT of that stuff. This gives results pronto! Of course if you're not already REALLY "regular"--you'll get that way. :D

PM for any more info.

Yo yo'd around for 10 years and then got serious and lost another 50 lbs last year. Mostly eating better and riding lots. At 51 I am in the best shape of my life. A1C/cholesterol/bp all in spec. My Dr. wants me to be his poster boy for diabetic compliance. I ride an hour/day. If anything I am getting stronger as I get lighter. Climbing like a bad thing.

I am trying to get down to 185. Just to say I can...

5'10" @ 151 lbs age 57. I'm a typical ectomorph. I'm always amazed when I hear of actors who gain 40 to 60 lbs for a part in a movie. I weighed 101 lbs as a freshman in High school because my parents said I couldn't play football unless I weighed over 100 lbs. That shows you how small my school was because i made the team. The most I've ever weighed was 160 after a winter of not much activity and lots of pasta and beer. This Winter I took up ski skating, which kept my activity up and helped when I got back on the bike this Spring. My wife has developed a lot of food sensitivities so our diet is limited now, no more wheat pasta, butter and dairy in general, although I'll have ice cream but rarely.

Wheat and Dairy are the most common food allergies in this country. But we have two huge industries bent on convincing us that they're good food. IIRC the big dairy group has an annual budget of 100+ million to serve that purpose.

And goat's milk dairy is easier digested if one craves dairy.

We've discovered the wonders of goat dairy, there's a little food speciality shop in our town that has a good selection. We've also found some places where we can get rice and potato pastas, they are really good.

As a former Greco-roman wrestler most my friends were on diets that were pretty severe. My brother cut from 145 his natural weight to compete at 120 and in college at 134. I think the line comes from percentage of bodyfat? We had one wrestler who had something like 2% which I understand is not healthy. There are probably studies on this and i'd bet it's more in the 7% range and when you fall below that you're performance might drop? Interesting question.

I just bought a scale and am having fun with charting morning-to-night differences. So, I'm 6'1" and just after waking, I'm 172 lbs. I have always felt like a skinny bastard (and people often call me both), but it seems that I'm downright robust in the cycling world.

and make it diet since there have been so many threads on it before. We all seem to find a balance between exercise and weight that we will live with. I saw that Ti-Boy posted. I used to know him reasonably well and his exercise routine would probably kill an ordinary person in 20 minutes. He has a DQ addiction. I like Healthy Choice Fudge Bars. Not DQ but it will have to do.

Bottom line is that if you are happy with your appearance, happy with the way you are riding, and realistic about it then life is good. I am a little under 5'10" and 152#. I will back to 149# by the end of the summer. I don't have enough money to spend on both the bike and food for me so the new crank comes first.
