View Full Version : Deletion of Threads

There have been several threads deleted recently, including mine. I assume they were deleted because they were not cycling specific. They were OT threads. In my thread I asked a specific question and stated very clearly that I was not trying to start a debate.

The very question that I asked was what OT topics will be allowed on the forum. I have started OT threads in the past. I wanted to know precisely what was going to be allowed on the forum so that I would post/initiate threads only that those at Serotta desired.

There were a few comments. I went to walk my dog and my thread is gone. It appears as if threads that remain on the forum in clear view, as you log on to the discussion section, is what will be accepted -cycling specific. Pete made a comment about allowable threads, but that isn't even readable as my thread was deleted.

If Seotta is going to mandate cycling specific threads, I have absolutely no problem with that at all as this is a cycling forum, sponsored by a wonderful cycling company. Whether that will diminish the identity and feel of the forum remains to be seen. I do think that those whose threads were deleted, that were benign in nature, should have been extended the courtesy of an explanation and then deleting the thread would have been ok.

If it is to be all cycling specific, so be it, but extend us the courtesy of telling us please. Many are not aware of that being the case.

Just say it first. That would be the nice way of doing it.

If that's what's going on I'm very disappointed. I come here to play, and learn.

Kinda of reminds me of work. Every now and again our management will decide that they are going to start enforcing some rule that has been being ignored forever.

At first, me and all the other children that I work with will throw a little pitty party and wave our hands in the air. After we get it out of our system someone reminds us that this happens every now and again and the best thing to do is abide for a few days until management finds some thing better to think about.

Tonight we will see a surge of OT threads (the hand waving), they (including this one) will be deleted, in a day or two the forum will be a little quiet but otherwise normal.

It's Life.

The difference is you know the rule and its been stated. We don't know the rule, and no OT threads certainly hasn't been made clear.

. . . as I don't think it's something Pete would do without posting some reason. I have not looked at the forum since earlier today and did not delete anything, nor would I except for obvious spam threads--porn, cell phone sales pitches, etc. I changed the wording of a spoiler thread subject the other day so as not to give away race info, but that was the first time I have ever done that and I considered that very special circumstances.

Sandy,

All I can say to you is, be careful what you wish for. You were one of the leaders in the peleton, pushing for change, increased input from the powers-that-be and yahtzee, you got it. LenJ pointed out there were a "Handful" (of trouble makers). Be cautious Sandy, you could be the next one grouped into that handful.

'The Dog and the Shadow':

Don't mean to be a trouble maker at all. I started the thread on the possibility of the forum being closed because Pete warned us of that very clearly in a previous thread and a lot of us may not have read it. Several before me complained that their threads had been deleted without explanation and they were not happy. My thread asking specifically what was allowed as OT posts was deleted.

I didn't initiate the idea of the forum being closed, nor did I start deleting posts. I just commented on both. I have always thought that Serotta should participate more in adding CONTENT to the Forum.

If I have started a thread that is not beneficial or meaningful, then I apologize. Best for me to perhaps say little at all in the future.

I was pushing for increased cycling content from Serotta, primarily, and secondarily, better communication of what Serotta wants from us relative to the forum. To be open and direct makes one vulnerable to reasonable disagreement, criticism, and being misunderstood, or misconstrued. To remain silent that vulnerability does not exist. Perhaps I should choose a better balance.

What A. L. Breguet said. Don't worry! Tomorrow it's going to be in the 70s and clear in your neck of the woods. Have a wonderful ride!

Yes, if there is a line--we need to know what it is so that we can gleefully comply.

and how in hoodyville can we discuss cycling without nutrition or coffee or beer?--I just have a hard time divorcing any subject from cycling.

Show us a line and most of us will happily comply.

These threads haven't been deleted, not even "Attica, Attica, Attica" so it may have just been a mistake. Or maybe a test

I'm afraid that deleting threads that, while OT, are positive in nature and fundamentally about the community and its members hanging out here with one another, is throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

In my opinion, it's ill advised from a business sense (possibly due to advice from someone who spends precious little time here?), and likely to gut the core of what value this asset contains.

I have to agree with the folks who are screaming that this forum is a vital part of the brand at this point.

Sandy,

You're in the Top Ten* of nicest cats east of the Mississippi. If the Serotta-related internet has to look out for you, the world is in trouble.

Bless you and King!
