As regularguy stated, you want a good crankset to line up your chainline. First off, what frame are you using? In regard to hubs, either go with the Paul Components or the Phil Wood hubs. Great quality, have threading for a freewheel, but also for fixed gear cogs for when you want to try it out. Go with either a Sugino Messenger crank, or try out the Paul cranks. Either one would be a great deal. If you are up to it, get the Paul cranks with a Phil Wood bottom bracket to match.

Here are the cranks. A little funky, but well worth it:

Any other questions?

Don't forget the 'other' extreme quality players out there, King, White Industries and Hope hubs.

Don't waste your time with the $15 Shimano or other El Cheapo BMX freehub, unless you aren't sure what gearing you want to use. They are neither round nor straight nor free-moving after getting even slightly dirty. If you've settled on gearing go directly to a White freehub, which costs three or four times as much but is worth every penny.

If you use a 42, 52, or 53 chainring you'll have lots of buying opportunities (including parts taken off as part of an upgrade). A 53x20 works out to be fairly close to 42x16, BTW. The size of the ring will strike fear into the hearts of children and lesser riders :)

Have fun!
