That's not a POS. If you drop all your preconceived notions that bike looks "right" in alot of ways. Still get a chuckle over the pipe insulation bar wrap...that's a classic ;)

Check out the '80s Grip Shift by the SRAM corp. That was their first attempt into the bike component market I think. Some of my buddies in Appleton were sponsored by them. Worked with DA ders and worked OK IIRC. Butt ugly, but it worked.
