What are those foam or rubber things that I see around some peoples' derailleur cables that keep the cables from rubbing in the paint on the headtube?

I put a small piece of shrink wrap on mine. I think anything will leave a mark, though, if it rubs long enough.

That's right, and a keen observation. It's pointless to install the material on the surface which is moving because it will still mar the fixed surface. Better to apply something to the surface that's fixed. But of course, then your beautiful frame will have these pieces of clear tape all over it...
