What's the diff between the two diameters? Why are there two types?

My application is only for the short section from the chainstay to the derailleur, since I'm using DT shifters. I usually just use the short section Shimano gives you, but I'm going with a custom color.

TIA

Dérailleur housing is 4MM.

Some shift cable housing is 5.0mm, some is 4.8mm (Campy) and some is 4.0mm (Shimano). They all have the same OD ferrules (but not ID) and they will all do the job.

Just don't use derailleur housing for your brakes.

Ahhh..........it's no problem. That "pop" sound of the housing imploding should give you plenty of warning that you are about to run into your garage door.

Scary stuff.

That's when I pick myself up, look around quickly going "Man, I hope nobody saw that..." open the door, crawl down into the cellar and go OOOWWWWW. The neighbors then look up from their morning paper and go "Dear, are there moose in the park?"

if a rider seems to crack the 4mm often (due to use/abuse/neglect/surface conditions) i'll install the 5mm. same ID from what i've seen but a bit more robust.

also, the 5mm uses the nickel plated brass ferrules which are also a bit more robust than the typical plastic 4mm ferrules (there are 4mm alu. ferrules as an alternative...but they tend to creak in the housing stops of some frames).

4 mm is optimal for cable 1.2 or smaller.
There is a reason the housing is stiff.

Do you ever find that plastic ferrules crack? After seeing these deteriorate on heavily used bikes after less than 1 season I've started replacing them on new setups.
