say I was to thread my rock lobster:

I'm using a 130 -17 ritchey stem

what size threaded nitto? they don't do the pearl in a 130....

I found this on a blog -- is it true or bs?

Because Nitto measures the extension length through the center of the extension rather than the top, their sizes wind up being a little smaller. So, a 8 cm Nitto stem will be the same length as an 8.7 cm stem measured as most other companies do. Generally, you can buy one size shorter than usual.

Why would you want to do that?

I've seen that too, but they always seemed to measure about the same to me, going from the center of the tightening bolt to the center of the bar clamp. I had a number of Pearls and Technomic Deluxes and never found a difference between those and other -17 degree stems.

because threaded is classy

and maybe because, (despite a gracious offers of frames from forumites) I may have found some NOS lugged stuff to replace the pacenti...and I need a stem so my position matches my rock lobster

that's not my experience.

The Pearl is definitely 7mm longer than the other nitto models,
and other quill stems.

I've posted side by side photos here several times before,
the Pearl is longer than the stated size. It's often quoted
on the net that this is the case. Check the iBob list, it's
all there.

You'd want a 12 cm Pearl (what's 3mm between friends anyway).

My 14cm Pearl measures 14.7...

the Pearl is definitely longer. You might want to get more than one size and switch around; it's what I do.

The Pearl is very stiff for what it is.

The Pearl is the best, prettiest old school stem going.

Don't know yet, I just ordered it the other day.

Knowing Nitto, I would guess that only the Noodle is a Noodle, but probably not a noodle.

if you keep most of the quill buried in the head tube,
it's not too bad. not as stiff as an ahead stem.

For the record, the Pearl is 72' so if you head tube is 73'
it's actually sloping down by a degree. In a 12.7 or 13.7
reach, that is a little lower in front.
