Just returned from a ride and broke the chain during the ride. Repaired it with a chain break in my tool bag and it seemed to work fine, however, chain started jumping a gear after about 15 miles but held together. Was about 1/4 mile from the end of the ride and it broke again. Is that typical? I'll add I've only seen it done before so this was my first try. Comments?

How many miles on the chain .... ?

After 2K I start to think about replacement. By 2200 or so, a new one
is on. I figure it's cheap insurance.

Here are a couple of links that should help:

I presume you were attempting to repair a 10-speed chain on the road? (9-speed chains rarely break) If so, I would suggest practicing it a few times at home, and better yet, use your breaker to remove the broken link and replace it with an appropriate reusable link. For Shimano, at least, you can easily do a permanent fix of a 9-speed chain on the road without a new pin or link, but not a 10-speed.

Finding a reusable link for Shimano 10-speed chains is tricky because the Wipperman link that is often listed as appropriate for Shimano is too narrow --there are some old threads on this site that will help (Dave is the expert). Here is what I use for Shimano (Wipperman 10S1): http://www.performancebike.com/shop/Profile.cfm?SKU=23283&item=50-6655&slitrk=search&slisearch=true (the current price at Performance is ~2x what I paid a few months ago so you might do a search for another source)

The Craig Superlink is supposed to work well with Shimano, and they also have one for Campy: http://www.lickbike.com/productpage.aspx?PART_NUM_SUB='0338-08'

Good luck,
Lew

Punny!I almost headed this one off, but thought nah, nobody else on this site could possibly have sufficient ADD to pick up on it --but 11 minutes later...

I'm glad I'm not alone!

Lew,
Thanks for the links. Very helpful. No need to comment on the rest of the responses.
