Time Pedal Washers: Necessary?

I seem to be missing a washer for my Time RXS pedals.

Is the washer necessary?

The washers aren't really to protect the pedal so much as they are to protect the crank. Generally, pedal washers are used with carbon cranks.

I use Time pedals on alloy cranks with no washer. Carbon crank, I use a washer.
