I was in a hurry this evening to change a tubular and made a particularly nasty mess of glue on my rim and tire. The glue came off of the rim easily with paint thinner, but I'm looking for ideas for removing glue from the black tire sidewalls. Tufo tape text time . . . . .

NOT Tufo tape next time...than you'll gripe about how hard it is to get the tire off!!!

Do not use a solvent on the tire itself, you will comprimise the base tape. Just live with it. Sorry about the mess.

Yes, but can I live with myself?

OK, here's what you do. Find a mud puddle and get the tire filty and everyone will assume you are a "to be feared as a retro-tubie riding hell raiser". shadddap and ride it. xxoo TT

I have found the use of masking tape applied to the glue pretty hard and then pulling it off takes off alot of the extra glue off a tire. sort of like a tape lint brush for glue.

Todd -- thanks for the tip. It also sounds like a quick way to shave my legs.

I have actually used WD40 in the past to help rub it off the tire. Still a messy job though...... PETE

Pete -- I read somewhere that WD40 can "eat" into the rubber. I'll give it a try though.

Depends on the glue.

For conti glue there are two options that I use.

1) Friction - Rub back and forth on the glue and it will come off.
2) Simple green and a rag, followed by a rinse with warm water to remove any of the simple green. Did this myself over the weekend after a sloppy tire mount late at night. The key is to keep the simple green to a minimum and rinse.
